Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I get a feel as to where they are, what exactly they want to learn and what the best way for both of us to acheive that goal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Working in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for the past 39 years, the last 20 as a paramedic. Teaching CPR/1st and classes for 38 years. Teach EMS classes as well.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I gauge pricing based on the student. I have a base price list and have tweaked it from time to time.
How did you get started teaching?
Both of my parents were EMTs and CPR instructors. My dad was a firefighter for many years and my mom was a nurse. Born into the trade I guess!
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all types. I have worked with children all the way up to grandparents. Students come from all walks of life and professions. Try to work with them all.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy hearing back from students that since the class have become involved in some sort of medical emergency. Regardless of their capacity at that particular time, they told me that they had the confidence, because of their class, to make a difference in someone's life.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Do your research. You want to pick an instructor that doesn't fill up the entire class time with "war stories". I tell stories that are pertinent to the topic at the time. Also you want an instructor with street experience. Anyone can teach from a book, but experienced instructors have been in real life situations and can teach you things that books can't.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What exactly are you looking for in a class? Do you need an actual certification or more of an awareness class. Do your homework and be prepared.
