Suzanne Barrett Justis is an International Master Wildlife artist recognized for her sensitive and accurate portrayal of her animal subjects. Albeit animals make up a large body of her work, Suzanne also does a lot of portrait and figurative work as well as landscapes and still life paintings. Suzanne is a member of several prestigious painting organizations including Artists for Conservation, Oil Painters of America and the Portrait Society of America. Suzanne works in her downtown Kingsport studio creating her paintings, It is also where she gives painting instruction to her many talented students. Her private lessons are given once a week for two hours a class. She also has a few group lessons available and does several workshops a year.
Many of Suzanne’s students, who had very little previous experience, have gone on to have their own professional painting careers.
I love combining my love of art and painting with my passion for the natural world. I love nurturing a new artist on their journey of fulfilling their artistic expression.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
All my students start out by doing two compulsory pieces. This allows me to understand the individual’s understanding of the medium and their technical ability. After the two compulsory pieces...my students are able to choose the subject matter for their next piece. I expose my students to color theory, brush technique, compositional elements of painting as well as many aspects other elements of successful oil painting
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My degree is a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from The University of Tennessee. I come from a family of artists..having started painting professionally when I was still in High School. I am mainly self taught and have been working as a full time professional artists for over 20 years.
