Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
FIND OUT WHAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE! That's DPV's first priority...We always customize the lesson to fit with the students interests and their goals. This is all done via the 20 minute 'Admissions Phone Call'. After which we will schedule the Introductory Lesson ($75). During this lesson our instructor will use 30 minutes as a mock lesson so the parent and student can get a feel for our teaching style. Then 30 minutes will be used to explain the program in full and answer any quesitons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Owner/Instructor, Lael Eccard joins his 4 instructors with over 125 years professional performance and teaching experience. All 5 instructors have degrees from schools like Berklee College of Music, Belmont, Musicians Institute and the like.

How did you get started teaching?
Lael says: "During my schooling at Musicians Institute I was a non-traditional student. I was 36 when I attended and wanted to finish a degree that I'd started nearly 20 years prior. I found many of my younger peers coming to me for help with our assignements. This felt great and I knew that passing along my knowledge and passion for music to others was what I wanted to do for the long term."
What types of students have you worked with?
Ages 4-60. All skill levels.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Our last "Live Concert" performance was a huge success and gives all my students real world experience performing on a stage, with a pro PA, gear and LIGHTS!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
MAKE SURE THE INSTRUCTORS HAVE HAD FULL STATE AND FEDERAL BACKGROUND CHECKS! Also, have they've been formerly schooled AND played professionally? See what they bring to the table. There's so many modern touches that can be used that the days of "here, play this sheet music over and over and over again" are...well...over. At DPV, instructors use several websites that keep kids engaged and wanting to practice their instrument.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Lael: "What do you want to gain from it all and are you willing to do what it takes to get that? I can make it fun and educational for the student...but there's gotta be support from the parents...just as you would with school homework. There's a level of commitment from both student and parent that is required to be successful for at any art form. If it's just picking up the instrument for fun there is still a level of commitment you should make to yourself (and your child if applicable)...after all, you are paying a professional...so make good use of your time with them and at home practicing."
