About
Ever since I began studying guitar seriously, I knew that teaching would always be a part of my musical life. I have an inborn desire to share what I know with others and to help them be better. My Suzuki training really focused that desire. I have an I ate ability to connect with young people and to establish a good report with parents.
Guitar lessons with me are not about learning a couple songs and going on your way. I am interested in helping the student develop and hone the entire playing mechanism. I really enjoy teaching children 4-11 but I also enjoy teaching all ages. In addition to classical guitar I also teach electric guitar and electric bass.
i have been playing guitar now for 30 years. In 2000 I earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Denver in Classical Guitar performance where I studied with world reknowned guitarist Ricardo Iznaola. In addition I have studied with Masakazu Ito, Jonathan Leathwood, David Leisner and performed in master classes with Antigone Goni, David Tanenbaum, Benjamin Verdery, Jason Vieaux, Roland Dyens and others. I have 4 units of Suzuki training under my belt as well as practicum. I founded the Austin Suzuki Guitar Institute and ran that for 4 summers. I have successfully started children as young as 3.5 years old, one of which is now 16 and stills takes lessons from me. I am very vested in my students.
I get the most satisfaction from taking someone who has never played an instrument and getting them to play at a high level.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I take on a new student my process differs depending on the age and experience. With elementary age children it is my preference for the parent and child to come and observe a lesson to get an idea of how I teach. If they remain interested I conduct and interview to find out things like previous lesson experience, the amount of current extra-curricular activities that could adversely affect progress, etc.
With students who have already been playing, I like to hear them and see where they are at and then initially make some gentle suggestions for improvement. Generally speaking, my policy is meet the student where they are at ability wise and emotionally and go from there.
