FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We love to have beginners but we also work with students who have all levels of experience.  Primarily our classes are taught with oils and we use a special palette arranged in perspective which helps students identify the "Whys" of color mixing and application.  All supplies are set up for our students at each class, all they need to bring is the desire to paint, wear old clothes and provide a roll of paper towels for hand wiping and clean up.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Both Robert and Susan Garden have Master's Degrees in Fine Art, his from the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL and Susan's from The University of Texas in Austin, Tx.

They are co-founders of the Robert Garden School of Art and Robert Garden Art Enterprises, Inc. established in 1976. They train and certify artists to teach their method of painting to others.  They also have their own line of painting supplies, books and videos.

They have received numerous teaching awards including "Teacher of the Year" and their works hang in galleries and private collections throughout the world.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

A complete 3 hour lesson including instruction and supplies cost between $35 and $45 per lesson depending on the host location.

How did you get started teaching?

Robert Garden's frustration in college level art classes led to his developing a system of teaching and learning called The Robert Garden Method, a scientific approach to painting.

What types of students have you worked with?

Robert Garden Art Enterprises, Inc. has taught classes to all age groups.  During the summer and spring break they conduct Adventures in Art Camps to students ages 5 to 13. Year round they offer classes to seniors and adults through Parks and Recreation centers and several Independent School Districts through Community Education.  Robert Garden Art Enterprises also teaches the Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of America where student earn merit badges in painting. Alsong with their regular You Can Paint classes they also specialize in teaching painting to youth and adults with special needs.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Robert and Susan Garden have combined their love for travel with their passion for art instruction on Painting Cruises,  worldwide and an Annual You Can Paint Beaches Retreat held in Port Aransas, Texas each October.  This October will be Robert's 46th year to offer his painting retreat.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Students should expect to find an experienced teacher who is not just an accomplished artist but a teacher who is talented in communication skills and offers an excellent and easy to follow curriculum which establishes goals and achieves  instructional objectives.  A teacher who is invested in their students learning outcomes will be a successful and will have many returning students.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

A student should consider their current level of experience.

Like any art form, students improve their skills with practice through carefully planned instruction in classes.  Robert Garden and his instructors are proficient in all of the basic mediums of painting, oils, acrylics and watercolors.

Students interest is peaked during each class and real satisfaction is experienced as students start and finish a completed painting each class with all supplies furnished as well as a detailed lesson plan.
