Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My approach with each player is different since no two players are the same. The first few minutes of the 1st session will always start with a few basic drills to observe and accurately evaluate their skillset. This allows me to customize the rest of that session and future sessions to get the most improvement out of every minute spent working with this player. With an open mind, Each player/parent is GUARANTEED to see improvement within the first 10mins of the session.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've played 14 years professionally, 6 years in the NBA, and 8 years overseas. With the addition of high school professional-level coaching to my resume. I am able to not only offer the skills I have acquired from playing at every level possible of basketball but also the knowledge of what the coaching side expects from each player.
During the off-season, I train and improve the skill set of both amateurs and professional players as well as my own personal growth. I also lead several skills camps during the summer at PSA in Plano. Coaching and educating players is my passion.......
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My Standard pricing system is given to the client upon our first contact.
How did you get started teaching?
Over the course of my career, I've always been a student of the game. Foreseeing the court's actions unfold before they are fully developed has always been a unique skill I've had from day one. As my basketball career progressed, I found myself more and more interested in coaches and their players' mindset. I began studying each team I played against. It wasn't long before my teammates would come to me and the coaches to ask my opinion on the game plan before and during the match.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with a wide variety of athletes. I've worked with and mentored beginners to professionals. Since I myself have played at every level (middle school and everything in between all the way to the highest level - NBA), adding my experience as a Nba coach allows me to not only know the game from experience but also help players understand what coaches want.... therefore I know I can relate to every player, no matter their starting point.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I'm fond of the experience I've had this basketball season (20-21) with Marcus High School. Seeing the improvement and mental growth these young men have gained has been the greatest reward I can ask for. Over the course of my career, a most recent event was when one of my players from a previous coaching season (an NBA vet of 10 years) was really struggling with finishing when up against guys bigger and or strong than him. We worked every day for a week, and each workout, he would be amazed at the things I taught him. He would say that no one in all his career had broken down things for him the way I did and had him doing and trying new things... then to see in the following game he was able to apply what he learned and was not only successful but scored. The look on his face and his pure appreciation for me working with him reminded me of why I love developing players.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice would be to research that trainer. Asking if you can visit the trainer during one of his/her sessions and watch them workout another player. Afterward, if you and your parent like what you've seen, then try one session and see if the trainer is more than just a great storyteller or showman. Word of mouth is one thing; action is another. Being a great trainer/coach is the ability to make the player in front of you better, not just physical talent but also mentally ingraining and increasing self-confidence. James Singleton
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Honestly, there is no such thing as an unrealistic or crazy question. A good teacher/trainer/coach will be able to address any question asked TRUTHFULLY.
