Frequently asked questions

Great question! My typical process for working with a new student involves the following steps:

  1. Needs Assessment: The first step is to conduct a needs assessment to determine the student's language proficiency level and specific language learning goals. During this assessment, I will ask the student questions about their background, interests, and learning style, and also evaluate their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

  2. Goal Setting: Based on the results of the needs assessment, I will work with the student to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. I will also help the student to identify potential obstacles and develop strategies for overcoming them.

  3. Lesson Planning: Once the goals are established, I will create a personalized lesson plan that is tailored to the student's needs and interests. This plan will include a variety of activities and materials, such as textbooks, videos, articles, and games, that are designed to engage the student and promote language learning.

  4. Instruction and Feedback: During each lesson, I will provide clear and concise instruction, as well as feedback on the student's language production. I will also encourage the student to ask questions and participate actively in the lesson.

  5. Progress Monitoring: To ensure that the student is making progress towards their language learning goals, I will regularly assess their skills and provide feedback on areas that need improvement. I will also adjust the lesson plan as needed to meet the student's changing needs and interests.

Overall, my goal is to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment that promotes language learning and helps the student to achieve their language learning goals.

I have always had a passion for English and language. After college, a friend of mine went to teach in Thailand and told me about her experience. I decided that I wanted to see the world and put my degrees to use so I packed my bags and went to Korea where I fell in love with teaching English and I haven't looked back since.

I have worked with all ages and levels from Kindergarten all the way up to senior level business men. I have taught general converation, pronunciation, and even business English.

All that being said, I prefer middle school learners and then universty or adult learners. I highly specialize in pronunciation, business English, and Exam preparation.

Recently, a student of mine who started learning English with me several years ago took her Cambridge Exam and passed her B1 exam. This is very significant because when we started working together, her English was just barely at A1 level.

If you're looking to hire an ESL teacher, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Look for experience and qualifications: Make sure the teacher you hire has a solid educational and professional background in ESL teaching. Look for certifications, degrees, and training in the field, as well as relevant teaching experience.

  2. Check references and reviews: Ask for references and check online reviews to get a sense of the teacher's reputation and track record. You want to work with someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, and supportive.

  3. Consider teaching style and approach: Different teachers have different teaching styles and approaches, so make sure to find someone whose approach aligns with your learning goals and preferences. Some teachers focus on grammar and structure, while others emphasize conversation and communication.

  4. Ask about lesson plans and materials: Find out what kind of lesson plans and materials the teacher uses, and make sure they align with your interests and needs. Look for teachers who use a variety of resources, such as textbooks, videos, articles, and games.

  5. Evaluate communication skills: Finally, evaluate the teacher's communication skills, both in terms of their ability to speak English clearly and their ability to explain complex concepts in a way that you can understand. You want to work with someone who is patient, encouraging, and able to provide constructive feedback.

Before talking to an ESL teacher about your language learning needs, it's a good idea to think through the following questions:

  1. What are my language learning goals? Think about what you hope to achieve with your language learning, such as improving your speaking, listening, reading, or writing skills, preparing for an exam, or advancing your career.

  2. What is my current level of English proficiency? It's important to have a clear understanding of your current level of English proficiency, so that you can communicate this to the teacher and they can create a personalized learning plan that meets your needs.

  3. What are my learning preferences? Think about your preferred learning style, such as whether you prefer a structured or more flexible approach to learning, and whether you prefer to focus on grammar, vocabulary, or conversation.

  4. What are my interests and hobbies? Consider your interests and hobbies, as they can be a useful starting point for selecting topics and materials that are engaging and relevant to you.

  5. What are my constraints and availability? Think about your availability and scheduling constraints, as well as any other factors that may impact your learning, such as time zone differences or access to technology.

By thinking through these questions ahead of time, you can better articulate your needs and goals to the teacher, and ensure that they are able to create a personalized learning plan that meets your specific needs and preferences.
