Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
How did you get started teaching?
After I completed my education, I lived in amazing Hawaii for many years. After working as a teacher with University of Hawaii, and Japan-American Institute of Management Science and others, I was offered a fantastic opportunity to work in the south of Japan as an English teacher for Sumitomo Industries. That lead to an remarkable career helping students from all over Asia achieve their goals of greater personal and professional success. Eventually, I pivoted from General ESL to focuse exclusively on American accent modification and communication. I would love to work with you as well.
What types of students have you worked with?
These days, most of my students are adult professionals who already function well in an English-speaking environment and are looking for help achieving greater personal and professional success.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Working with great students is always an even I am fond of.
Ambition is great, but to avoid frustration and disappointment, please be realistic in your expectations. Unless you are very young, it is highly unlikely you will be able to sound exactly like a native speaker of American English! However, there is no need to sound exactly like a native speaker of American English to have a beautiful accent and exceptional communication skills. If you are willing to commit and to work at it, you can learn to be a much more effective communicator and sound much more like a native speaker of American English. You can learn to speak more naturally, with greater clarity, beauty and confidence. When you can do this, people will naturally want to be around you, to listen to you and be persuaded by your ideas. This will make you more successful in your personal and professional relationships. You can do it!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Shop around and choose wisely. Be honest with your prospective teacher about what you expect and what you want. Only work with a teacher who specializes in accent modification, pronunciation and communication. Have a trial lesson before you make any commitments. Run away from anyone who promises you instant success or that you will sound exactly like a native speaker of American English!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The process of accent reduction and the improvement of speaking and communication skills works best when you are clear and realistic about your goals. If you are fuzzy about your goals, book a trial lesson with a teacher and ask him or her to help you focus. Think about these questions first.
1. Why do you want to work on your accent / English? What is it that is going on in your life now that you feel is limiting you in some way.
2. How much time are you willing to invest in lessons, and more importantly, in homework practice outside of lessons?
3. Are you goals realistic? Very few students of accent modification will end up sounding exactly like a native speaker of any language, particularly if you are an adult.
4. Therefore, would you be satisfied and happy with speaking more naturally with greater clarity, “beauty” and confidence?
