About
Matt Westmoreland has been teaching piano and trumpet for over five years as well as perfoming professionally for nearly a decade. Matt bases individual lessons around the songs his students want to learn and focuses on the importance of reading music and understanding music theory.
Matt enjoys meeting new people, getting to know students on an individual basis, and motivating his students of all ages to reach their goals through hard work and practice. Seeing a student succeed is his number one priority!
In 2017, Matt was nominated by the Dallas Observer as "Best Pianist in Dallas-Ft Worth". He graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Degree. During his time at UNT, he played in various collegiate bands including: the Three O'Clock Lab Band, The Five O'Clock Lab Band, The Zebras, Brass Band, Concert Band, Marching Band. Since college, Matt stays active in the music scene by performing at church weekly, having an original band that he writes music for, and plays in several bands that perform at weddings/corporate events. He also stays active in doing recording sessions for TV/radio.
I enjoy working with students who want to learn! I enjoy teaching all styles of music including Classical, Jazz, Pop, Contemporary Christian music, etc. Finding what type of music the student enjoys is so important to me because I find that students who play what they enjoy will make time to practice. I love seeing the progress that students can make even in one week of practice!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I like to find out what inspires the student to make music as well as determine what their goals are. From there we start to work on the fundamentals of music by working out of beginner lesson books in addition to working on songs that the student wants to learn. For more advanced students, fundamentals are not necessary but a review of terminology always helps.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to graduating from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Degree, I have been teaching for over five years. I also stay busy as a professional musician performing all over DFW in various bands (church, weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, etc) as well as recording session work (recording for TV/radio).
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$35 per 30 minute lessons
$50 per 45 minute lessons
$65 per 60 minute lessons
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching at a private music studio over five years ago where I was working with more than 50 students a week.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught students of all levels and ages (between the ages of 5-74) and always love to work with new students! I understand that many students are busy with school, sports, work, and other extracurricular activities. I am very flexible in understanding students schedules and know that with a good teacher, students are more likely to find time to practice their instrument.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of being flown out to perform at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs for a wedding. I had a great time playing for the ceremony and reception!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It's ok to make mistakes! It's my job to help you have fun through the process of learning an instrument. I'm not looking for students to be "perfect" all the time..I just want them to walk away from the lesson feeling good about themselves and know that they are making progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1) Do you have access to a keyboard or piano?
(If not I am able to give you suggestions on what to get)
2) How much time do you think you can commit to practicing each week?
3) Are there any styles of music you enjoy the most?
4) What inspires you?
