Ben Ruiz - French Horn And High Brass Lessons
About
Hello, my name is Ben. I am a full time professional french horn player residing in the D.C. area with over a decade of playing experience. I have been in the music education field for about 4 years now and I hold a bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas. I've had full high school, middle school, and personal lesson studios. I have experience teaching trumpet, mellophone, alto/tenor horn and french horn. I have taught all levels, all the way from special needs beginners who need extra tailored lessons to seasoned college students looking for a playing job.
I have listed my playing experience below so that you can have full confidence in my abilities as a performer.
Currently holding professional horn playing positions in the U.S Army Band, "Pershing's Own" concert band and Assistant Principal Horn of The Dallas Winds.
Former 2nd horn of the Dallas Brass Band
Former Carolina Crown Mellophone section leader, 3 year veteran, horn soloist for the 2023 show.
Former Principal horn in the Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra
Formerly in Several UNT ensembles - Wind Symphony (principal horn), Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra (principal horn), Wind Orchestra, Brass Band (solo horn)
3-time Top Ensemble TMEA All-State player - Major works included Rite of Spring, Shostakovich 10, and Symphonic Suite on a Waterfront by Bernstein for band.
Note: this list is heavily condensed and does not include freelance work I have done in the DFW area.
If you are a middle schooler just starting out, or if you are an advanced high schooler looking to make All-State, I can help you out!
With over 9 seasons of marching, and 3 years teaching marching band specifically, I also offer drum corps audition help, as well as any similar topics such as visual marching techniques if requested.
I have a real passion for teaching students. Even now as a full time professional player, I seek teaching opportunities because I know without key teachers throughout my life I would not be where I am today. I would like to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of brass players. Whether you're a fresh beginner, a college student taking professional auditions, or a parent simply looking for a teacher who will invest time and effort into your child, I believe I can be of great help to you.

For a beginner, I can drive the lesson and use my pedagogical knowledge to properly start them off.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
