Mrs. Begay is the first and one of the best flute private tutors my daughter has. She is always encouraging and caring. She is not only a flute teacher but also a best friend, big sister, serious instructor, and mentor who is always there trying to help. My daughter studies one year with her, and fell in love with flute immediately after several lessons with her. We are so appreciative of what she did.

Heidi Begay was my flute private lesson teacher for 7 years, from my 6th grade year to my senior year in high school. I would have one lesson a week, starting off at 30 minutes and then increasing to an hour in my junior year of high school. Throughout my years of lessons, Mrs. Begay was very helpful in my flute advancements. She helped me on my All-Region music, ensemble contests, and solo contests, as well as building up my repertoire so that when I graduated, I was a well-rounded flute player that could be successful if I were to continue on with my playing. She was very educated in musical theories and history, and if ever had a question or needed help with anything that pertained to music, she was able to help me. Without her guidance, I would never had been able to reach the musical accomplishments that I did, including high scoring solos, being a part of an All-Region band, and becoming one of the top flute players in my high school. One thing that I would say she could do better is to not assign as much homework. Because I knew I wasn’t perusing music in college, I felt that in my second semester senior year when we were studying very advanced scales and patterns, it was a waste of time to put do much energy into my lessons. If I were to pursue a music major in my college plans, then the practicing would have been more justified, but because I wasn’t, it felt a little overdone. Overall, Heidi Begay was an amazing teacher, mentor, and friend, and I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a teacher.

Mrs. Begay has a driven and focused teaching style. She helps her students set realistic goals and will be very adamant about reaching those goals. Due to her attentiveness, she is able to cater her lessons to each of her students specific needs. Mrs. Begay is willing to do whatever is necessary to help her students succeed and that dedication is very rare among most teachers.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I focus on understanding their unique goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. We begin with a discovery session to assess their current skill level, identify specific challenges, and discuss what they hope to achieve. Together, we create a customized roadmap that includes technical exercises, repertoire, and holistic approaches to artistry, ensuring a well-rounded and enjoyable learning experience. My teaching emphasizes personal growth, artistic expression, and career development for those interested in expanding their flute journey.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Doctorate in Musical Arts (DMA) with a specialization in flute performance and pedagogy. My experience includes training with renowned mentors, as well as performing and teaching in diverse settings. As the host of the Flute 360 podcast, I share my insights with flutists worldwide, blending my academic expertise with real-world application. I also lead the Flute 360 Accelerator program, which equips modern-day flutists with the tools to grow personally, artistically, and professionally.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes, my pricing is structured to accommodate different student needs. Lessons are available in 30, 45, and 60-minute increments, with rates based on the lesson duration and frequency. I also offer bundled packages for ongoing mentorship (discount included!), and FREE group options through the Flute 360 Accelerator program. For detailed pricing, please feel free to reach out directly.
How did you get started teaching?
My teaching journey began during my undergraduate studies, where I fell in love with guiding students in discovering their unique musical voice. Over the years, my passion for teaching grew as I realized the profound impact I could have not just on my students' flute playing but also on their personal and professional development. This inspired me to expand my offerings through Flute 360, creating a platform to support flutists holistically.
What types of students have you worked with?
I’ve worked with a wide range of students, from beginner and intermediate flutists to advanced performers pursuing competitive careers. My students include adult learners rediscovering their passion for the flute, young musicians preparing for auditions, and professionals seeking guidance in entrepreneurship and performance. I’ve also supported flutists navigating challenges such as performance anxiety and injury recovery.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent highlight was the Flute 360 Accelerator program session on January 25, 2025. This session was particularly inspiring as flutists came together to discuss their challenges and aspirations in a safe, supportive environment. We explored topics like overcoming performance anxiety, building confidence on and off the stage, and embracing individuality as modern-day musicians. The live interaction and Voxer group discussions allowed participants to connect, share their experiences, and encourage one another. Witnessing their breakthroughs and seeing how the program fosters both personal and professional growth reminded me of the power of community in the musical journey.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who aligns with your goals and values, someone who can guide you holistically as a person, artist, and musician. Don’t be afraid to ask about their teaching philosophy, methods, and how they will tailor lessons to your needs. A great teacher should not only build your skills but also inspire you to express your unique voice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should reflect on their goals, whether they’re technical, artistic, or career-focused. Consider what inspires you, any challenges you’re facing, and the type of learning environment you thrive in. It’s also helpful to think about your schedule and commitment level to ensure a consistent and rewarding learning experience.
