Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I can work with students in any of 4 sports: football, baseball (or softball), track, or golf. Initially, we need to assess one's abilities and ascertain what stage of development he/she is in. Then we set goals and go to work. We progress at the rate dictated by the student's development. Slow, steady improvement is the goal, enabling one to participate and compete at the level he/she desires.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I played four sports in high school: football, basketball, baseball, and track & field. I picked up golf later. Football was probably my best sport. I was a 1st-team all-state receiver and was picked to play in the Texas v. Pennsylvania (Big 33) all-star game. I was also the national champion in the long jump at the National Junior Junior Olympics track meet held in Minnesota.
Later I was a captain at Baylor and an all-conference receiver. I was named best conference receiver by Texas Football magazine. I had a short stint with the Denver Broncos.
I love all sports and play golf when I can. I consider it a privilege to work with students and have great fun doing it.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For beginners, I usually charge $40 per hour. The rates might be slightly higher for more advanced students--but never more than $50 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have coached youth football, baseball and basketball. I have also worked with individual athletes who want to improve their skills. I enjoy all sports but particularly enjoy coaching football athletes and beginning golfers of any age, male or female.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages and abilities. I just enjoy helping anyone improve their skills so that they can participate and compete and have fun doing it at their own rate and skill level.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I witnessed one golf student impove her driving distance from 110 yards to about 160 yards. Obviously, she enjoys her golf matches with her friends far more now than she used to.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who is patient but will still push you a bit. Find a coach who takes pleasure in seeing you improve your skills far more than just taking your fee.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. What are my goals?
2. Am I willing to spend time not just playing my sport, but improving my skills with some dedication?
3. Is my coach someone I can enjoy being around and learning from?
