I have been teaching secondary art for 14 years in DISD. I hold a BA in The Visual Arts and MA in Education. In teaching drawing and painting, I believe that exercises must achieve a balance between learning technique and developing self-expression. As students are guided through the creative thinking exercises I help ensure that they develop their individual artistic style and not become clones of the illustrations I have used. The technique exercises are intended to expand the skills and improve the execution of their art work. These techniques must be so well learned that they reside in the subconscious and not thought about during the creative process, simply executed intuitively when needed.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
As an art teacher, I will teach new students basic art drawing and painting techniques and encourage them to take the techniques further. I will inspire them to practice new art skills that may be uncomfortable at first but will help them be better artist later. I well allow them to explore different mediums and art styles.
