About

Every student has different reasons for taking painting classes. I take the time to learn about their desires and interests and to develop classes specifically for them. Whether you are looking for a relaxing hobby or striving to bring your ideas to the canvas, my teaching style includes information, tips, and tricks that you can apply across all your painting endeavors. I love learning and, like most lifelong learners, I love teaching.

I love to create classes and instructional material as much as I love painting. I have a degree in Anthropology and spent 7 years working with individuals with MHMR. I believe in creating individualized plans for each student, casual painters and serious enthusiasts, according to their interests and abilities. Much of my work is done prior to the actual lessons. I believe learning to paint is an empowering experience and that anyone can learn to paint. As your instructor, I'll 1st learn why and what you wish to paint and then develop lessons that help you meet your goals. If you just want to have some fun painting pretty pictures, we'll definitely be doing that, but chances are you'll be learning about making art at the same time because I love to share the things I've learned in my 22 years as a self taught artist.

Kathryn is very patient with my girls and she takes time to explain the reasoning behind the different techniques she is teaching. She listens to what they are interested in and she incorporates learning in a way that is enjoyable to them. She is caring and compassionate and I would definitely recommend her as an instructor.

    Frequently asked questions

Before lessons begin,  I send a short questionnaire and information about supplies. (Supplies may also be purchased at local arts and crafts stores or Amazon, but I recommend you read the kit.co list I send so you'll understand what to buy and why.) We set a schedule and start date. We'll meet via Skype.  Homework is occasionally assigned for students (or parents) who desire it. At the end of each class we talk about the direction of the next class. I develop each class individually, the pacing and amount of information in each lesson varies as we both learn what type of paintings you are interested in making.

I am a self taught painter. My degree is in Anthropology! I started out painting objects and selling in weekend street fairs while working as a support specialist for adults with MH and/or MR . I had some of my early work published in the US and Spain. I have designed how to projects for the arts and crafts industry, painted faces at special events, worked as a substitute teacher 1st through 6th grades, volunteered at an afterschool arts outreach program, and designed and led private workshops for mixed age groups.

I have taught painting, art basics for homeschoolers, origami for kids, collage, polymer clay, and papermaking for artists.  I am a certified instructor for Grumbacher and spent 2 years leading painting workshops for both kids and adults at a Michaels store.

For the past year, I have started working with students of all ages in private lessons. All my lessons are now done via Skype.

Classes are $25. for one hour, $40. for 2 hours. You may invite a friend or sibling of similar level at no charge.  I confirm the date with you, a day or two before each session. Then I email an invoice which includes .0675% tax and is due immediately.

I can be flexible, schedule permitting, but I do require good communication. Failure to log in to Skype within 15 minutes of our time, forfeits class payment and session. Let me know as soon as there is a delay and we may be able to work out an alternate or later time.

The policy is no refunds. While I prefer to work with you regarding any scheduling issues, I am not obligated to alter the class time or issue refunds.

I have designed and led classes for mixed age groups, adults, and most frequently kids 6-12. I have a lifetime of experience working with adults and children with mental retardation and physical limitations. I believe we are all multi-faceted and deserving of individual consideration. Most students thrive with much kindness and encouragement coupled with reasonable expectations and honest assessments.  I am there to guide each student into their own practice as an artist by providing a foundation and framework for acquiring art skills.
