About

I'm Shelley Young and have been instructing at the Visual Art Institute in Salt Lake City, and Alpine,, Utah for the last ten years. I have a Foundational Degree from the Watts Atelier, Encinitas, CA, and have studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Firenze, Italy. I teach a variety of mediums and classes: oil, watercolor, charcoal, drawing, painting etc. Specialty focuses would include portrait, Figurative, Landscape, and still life. I also teach Cartooning and Caricature classes. In setting art goals with you, the student, we can decide together where you want to start, what subject you'd like to work on, and how best to hone in on your skill sets! I look forward to meeting you and demonstrating through a personalized curriculum, my approach to making your dreams come true as an artist! Please contact me at 385-375-0728

I love teaching as much as I love making art myself! To help students improve their art skillsets and outcomes is very gratifying. Working with color and the practice of drawing and painting are very regenerative for the soul. I like to get to know my students and their desires and show them how they can accomplish what they hope for in the way of great art!

Shelley is an exceptional instructor. She is very knowledgeable of many techniques and artist practices. She is so enthusiastic and encouraging to students and is able to help students accomplish their artistic goals. She has a great sense of humor and puts students at ease, removing any discomfort or uncertainty in trying new things. She is great with students that are just starting out or she can challenge students that are more experienced. She draws upon her wealth of knowledge to demystify and make accessible even complex subjects. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of receiving instruction and watching her demonstrate new techniques. I highly recommend her as your next drawing or painting teacher.

    Frequently asked questions

I like to meet with the student and interview them to find out what their art goals are, and what they want to improve in most. I prefer to demonstrate first, and then let the student try a new skill or medium.  I believe any student who has great desire, can achieve great success if they are willing to learn  new methods and practice repeatedly. I love to teach as much as I love to make art myself so this makes for a win/win for both of us!
