Salt Lake City School Of Piano And Theory
About
I have been teaching piano and theory for nearly 25 years. The first lessons I gave were in Hobart, Tasmania Australia as adjunct faculty to the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. This was during my final year in my under graduate degree in piano performance. Upon taking residence at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to complete my Master's in performance, I took on new students as a private instructor. I developed greatly as a piano instructor and developed a passion for teaching. Watching and listening to students as their techniques grow and expand is a marvelous thing.
My instructors in piano taught in the great traditions of their teachers. I studied under Sir Ronald Farren-Price while living in Melbourne. He was taught by Claudio Arrau and his lineage traces back to Beethoven. I undertook further studies with Berryl Sedivka while studying at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. Her teacher was the great Solomon Cutner whose lineage traces back to Clara Schumann. Studies were further continued with Ian Munro, whose lineage can be traced to Bela Bartok and Alfred Cortot.
Upon arrival at the Conservatorium of music in Sydney I continued study with Dr. Paul Rickard-Ford.
While undertaking my degrees in music performance. I entered a number of competitions and either won or placed highly. I have a great passion for performance and teaching. I developed this from an early age while listening to my mother play, herself a graduate from the Royal College of Music in London, and that passion continues to grow today. I have a highly developed sense of musicianship and inherent understanding of the direction a piece should take. As a teacher, I seek to impart that knowledge to my students. I hope to continue my journey in music, and on the way share, through teaching, the lessons of my instructors.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Get to know them, what they want to learn and what type of music they would like to play. I will teach very young students fun pieces that engage their interest. Although I was taught in the classical manner, I believe it's very important to teach students what they enjoy listening to, and as such I teach I broad style from classical through to pop and everything in between.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a masters in performance and pedagogy and have had years as a piano instructor and student myself. I know what it's like on both side and can fully understand the frustrations of learning and what it takes to prepare for a lesson.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My prices are as follows
$30 per half hour
$60 per full hour.
for very young students 8 or under I limit the lesson to 15 mins and charge $20.
How did you get started teaching?
It grew from my passion as a performer and from my desire to share the knowledge of my teachers with other students. I love playing piano and there is such great joy in watching a student grow in their abilities and desire for the piano.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types. Very young as in 6 to mature students 60 and older. From complete beginners that have never read music to more advanced. I also work with special needs students such as those with autism. If someone has the desire to learn, I will teach them.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that works with you in helping you grow through music. Teachers that are too rigid can lessen the enjoyment of learning. I want my students to leave a lesson having enjoyed their time.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What they want to learn. Why they want to learn. How long will it take to start playing a piece of music. Will scales be involved. Is theory taught.
