Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to review a few basic fundamentals with each new student--We go over supplies, and personal goals, then I teach important concepts related to drawing, value, edges, and color.
After a few guided exercises, we discuss subject matter students are interested in painting and mastering. Each lesson becomes a unique coaching/mentoring effort to help new students develop their skills and realize their own vision.
My focus in teaching is to empower each student with the skillset necessary to paint in a traditional manner, and then let them explore where they'd like to go from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied painting at Brigham Young University-Idaho earning a BFA in 2010. I had the privilege of studying with the prestigious William Whikater for many year after that in his personal studio.
After graduating, I began teaching drawing and illustration for Salt Lake Community College, and online for BYU-Idaho. I have also been teaching students how to paint after a traditional manner for over 10 years.
My personal artwork focuses on portrait comission, but I love to paint all subject matters. I enjoy teaching just as much as painting!
