About
Sofia Tsanova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria to a family of principal dancers. Sofia grew up watching rehearsals and performances at the National Ballet and Opera Theatre of Sofia, where, at the age of five, she started her ballet classes at the pre-professional school of Maria Ilieva.
During the early years of her dance education Sofia participated in some performances of the National Ballet and Opera Theatre, and in 1998 was accepted into the National School for Dance Art under the instruction of Katya Petrovska and Lyubov Fominih. Shortly after being accepted into the school, Sofia was invited to perform the final ballet exams of graduating students from the National
University of Performing Arts of Sofia.
In 2001 Sofia moved to Seoul, South Korea where she studied at the Sunhwa Arts School - Ballet Division under Vera Solovyeva and Nikolay Levitsky, occasionally dancing and touring with the Universal Ballet Company. After a year in South Korea, Sofia returned to Bulgaria where she continued her education at the National School for Dance Art and performed with the National Opera and Ballet of Sofia.
In 2004 Sofia came to the United States, where she studied and worked at the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. She received scholarships to continue her studies at The New World School of the Arts and later the Kirov Academy of Ballet in D.C.
In 2010 Sofia decided that she wants to pass on the knowledge of the Vaganova method and has been a guest teacher at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet, has taught at several schools in the DMV area for 10 years, including the Academy of Russian Ballet, Washington School of Ballet, and Strictly Rhythm. For the last 8 years Sofia has also been working as a ballet teacher, movement and conditioning coach for rhythmic gymnasts, including National Team and Elite Squad members competing at an international level.
