About

I have been featured in cover stories about my playing for the community and online throughout the pandemic, in cover stories at Washington Post, WJLA-TV, and in Washingtonian and feature articles worldwide (even on the NFL Draftathon!).I have very deep knowledge of chamber and orchestral music, both as a performer and as a music theorist (with a PhD in music theory). (I also work professionally on college music textbooks.) I am an active chamber and orchestral player, with a broad knowledge of musical styles, and a member of non-classical groups in folk, rock, and other styles. I improvise and arrange music constantly, and encourage students to develop abilities for playing by ear, improvising, or composing. I feel strongly that a good understanding of music is essential for good performance of any kind of music. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2020/03/26/many-people-are-doing-good-combat-fear-isolation-coronavirus/

I love watching how the lives of students change as they learn more about music, and become able to make music with others or simply express themselves, or even just become better listeners. I love helping students finding their own voice both through classical repertoire and through improvising, and especially, discovering the joys of communicating musically with other players.

Jodi is a wonderful teacher and I feel so lucky to have had the chance to study with her! I am an adult student (early 30s) and it had been many years since I had taken lessons. I came to her hoping to fix some bad habits, work on some repertoire that I had gravitated towards during the pandemic as well as to learn and explore the Klezmer music tradition. Jodi helped me with all this and more, focusing (and challenging me!) on certain fundamentals (particularly bowing technique) while pairing this with thoughtfully curated repertoire and duets (dueting together was one of my favorite parts of the lesson!).  Once I had joined a community orchestra she helped me with challenging passages for this as well. Jodi is not just a thoughtful teacher but also just a kind and fascinating person and I looked forward to spending time and chatting together around the lesson itself.  I think she would be an excellent teacher at any stage because of how she curates to the individual -- nurturing but also rigorous-- and I wish I could have studied with her even earlier on!
(on a practical note as an adult with weird work hours/schedules I was very grateful for her flexibility as well on our lesson schedule (could ebb and flow in frequency and she gave different time slot options).

Learning cello from Jodi has been a highlight of my last 4 months. As an adult learner, with no previous musical instruction, I think I present some unique teaching challenges and Jodi has been brilliant at meeting my specific needs. I also appreciate her supportive instruction, humor, porch concerts, and involvement in her community. I highly recommend her, and look forward to learning from her for years to come. -- Alix Lambert

In addition to being a skilled, experienced musician who conveys her passion for cello, Jodi is an attentive teacher who individualizes each lesson to meet the needs of her student. She treated my 11 year old daughter with absolute respect and gentle kindness while showing her that with discipline and commitment she could see steady improvement. Her lessons were fun and creative and encouraged my daughter to learn to truly PLAY (that is, enjoy!) the cello.
