I am passionate about art. I believe that everyone can learn to draw and paint. I believe I can help artists at any level learn, improve, and enjoy creating works of art! My preferred medium is soft pastel. I offer information and instruction on materials needed to get started, underpainting techniques, painting techniques (layering, blending, washes, etc), studio safety, framing and storing pastels, etc. I paint in a realistic style and my favorite subjects are from nature...seascapes, animals, birds, landscapes. I offer private classes in both drawing and pastel, as well as group classes through the Great Falls School of Art.

When I am painting I am lost in my work and forget about everything. I love to see my students learn, and then loosen up to create works in their own styles with this wonderful medium.

Lori knows so many painting techniques and is able to effectively communicate and model these techniques as she instructs students. Additionally, she is very pleasant to listen to and to watch as she demonstrates techniques. She is honest yet patient, remembering your past successes and building on your skills. I had wanted to learn about painting with Pastels for some time and I was so happy to have found Lori and be able to take classes with her. After unsuccessfully looking at books on pastel painting, I joined Lori’s Intro to Pastels class. This class has opened a whole new medium for me, one that I will stick with. Even though my interest is portraits and figures, and Lori’s is landscape, she still provides me with valuable advice. I have taken several sessions of the same class over the last couple of years, in which I work on my own painting but feel I continue to learn. What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Nothing is as intimidating as staring at a blank paper or canvas, with your drawing or painting materials in front of you, and not knowing what to do. I break down the process into steps, from planning, gathering materials, sketching, underpainting, finishing, framing, storing, etc.
