She is an accomplished working musician and an excellent motivator. Lessons are not just about technique, which she knows plenty about, but also communicating the feeling behind the music. She is comfortable teaching young beginners, experienced players, and even grandmothers (like me) who just want to try something new. That was 7 years ago, and she hasnt given up on me yet! She is also a composer, and welcomes helping others get their work out there.
    I highly recommend her.

Brittany is absolutely the best music teacher any parent could ask for when looking for someone for lessons. My son has been with her for seven years now, and shes helped guide him musically, creatively, and I credit her with part of why hes willing to step out of his comfort zone and try new things. Unlike some teachers, she takes a very personalized approach to help students set and meet goals. Shes also built a strong community for her students, and constantly thinks outside of the box to find ways to offer them new opportunities.

She’s a talented bassist and a prominent figure in the music world herself. She taught me just as many life skills and how to navigate the complex music scene as she did double and electric bass. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned from her and all the opportunities she’s given me to become the best player I can be.

    Frequently asked questions

I get to know the student and what they are looking for out of lessons. The first lesson is often like the first day of school; we do some playing, we get to know each other, I find out where their skill level is and begin building in information they need.

I do have a cirriculum and structure, but it is by no means inflexible.  As lessons progress, lesson material and content may become customized as I learn more about a student's goals.

I graduated Bloomsburg University with a dual major in Applied Music; Double Bass and Audio Recording Engineering.  I took cello lessons for about 2 years while I was in college.  I've played guitar since I was 15 years old (techincally 13, but I got more serious when I was 15). I took formal lessons on guitar for 2 years.  I've also taken hand drumming and kit drumming classes to help me become a better bass player, in terms of understanding the relationship between the drums and the bass player.  I've also taken electric bass lessons from many modern day masters such as Michael Manring, Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, solo artist), Adam Nitti (solo artist, Kenny Loggins), Gerald Veasley (world renowned contemporary jazz bassist), and Anthony Wellington (Victor Wooten band, owner of Bassology).  My time spent with these masters (and in some cases, still being spent) has definitely helped shape an informed awareness of navigating a music career in the face of evolving technology and business paradigms.

I continue my training by attending clinics, masterclass, and taking lessons as I am able.  Within the past few days I completed a vocal masterclass with Peggy Weston, a well known name in the NoVa/DC region.  I am always looking for opportunities to grow my skills as a musician and business person, and I share that growth weekly with my students.

The final component I have to offer is all the on the job training I have; playing gigs as a versatile musician, as both a sideman and a frontman, in an evolving industry over 20+ years...all of this has given me a lot of knowledge to impart.  I've played rock, jazz, blues, Celtic, musical theater, orchestra gigs, biker bars, DIY tours across the country, and much more.  And there's still so much territory I'm looking forward to covering and learning about!

All studios in the City of Fredericksburg (home studio/Lady Bass Music, Forte Music, Pickers Supply) are charged at $30 per half hour and $60 per hour.  Skype lessons are charged at the same rate.

For RVA students (Richmond) please contact the Lesson Coordinator at Sam Ash directly for rates.  Rates can vary based on your needs.  Store info is here; http://locations.samashmusic.com/va/richmond/55/

What drew you to the instrument that you picked?  (There's no right answer here...just be honest. I've heard lots of different answers, including "I don't know").

What do you hope to get out of lessons? (Once again, I've heard lots of different answers, including "I don't know".  Just be honest and go from there.)

Usually I start with these questions, and ask more personalized ones as I begin to find out who my student is and what brought them into lessons.
