About

Hello!

Thank you for your interest! I am a saxophonist with a BM, MM & DMA in saxophone music performance. I have taught private lessons for 25 years to beginning, middle, and advanced students.

I have a wide range of teaching and performing experience to include private lessons, general music in the classroom for K-6th, adjunct faculty at various colleges, and a veteran of the USAF Bands.

I enjoy teaching music and the process that goes into curtailing lessons for the individual student, with an overall structure that is clear and comprehensive.

My goal is to teach the foundations and artistic goal of playing, as well as how to practice, which leads to maximizing the most out of your time in lessons and on the horn.

I genuinely enjoy teaching music- at any level. Currently, I am a general music teacher for K-6th grade, and although I have a doctorate in music, putting together lesson plans and organizing curriculum is something I love doing, because there is creativity to it.

I am very good at teaching the basics of music: notes, rhythm, phrasing, technique, & tone. Knowing how to practice and arrange the time you spend learning music is very important. I am very clear about the concepts I teach, patient, and joyful.

I have playing the saxophone for 42 years, with a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. I was a professional musician with the United States Air Force Bands with whom I toured, performed, and recorded. My professional experience includes playing with orchestras, wind ensembles, concerto competitions, chamber groups, jazz bands and combos.

Overall, my love and passion for music is a staple of who I am. I try to be as approachable and relatable as possible, all while my students and I have fun.

At this time the online option works really well. It saves time spent on travel and the technology available makes it really simple to take classes online. Additionally, it is a great alternative at this time of Social distancing. Taking classes online is safe and effective. Julie is a fantastic instructor with a lot of patience. She is also thorough and worked with me closely since this is the first time I am learning a completely new musical instrument.

    Frequently asked questions

Lesson 1:  An overview of equipment (reeds, mouthpiece, ligature, neck strap, music stand, metronome), assessing level (beg, intermediate, advanced), asking the student what their goals are in taking lessons, and music books needed.  Play, then assign what to practice for next lesson.

Lesson 2: Warm ups. Review the basics of music: scales, rhythm, note-reading.  Student and I go over music goals. Assign what, and how, to practice for next lesson.

Lesson 3: Now we will tie in a typical lesson in the same manner that the student will organize their practice time as we warm-up, review etudes, theory & technique, music piece. Specific practicing goals for next lesson.

Lessons 4 & con't: The outline of lessons will remain the same, tapered to the needs of what is being practiced and learned.

Thoughout each lesson, I play with you and for you, so you clearly know what concept, technique, and musical goal towards which you are working.
