Hampton was a top recruit from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, MD before embarking on his multi-faceted collegiate journey. His first two years of college were spent at Virginia Commonwealth University,Then joining the ranks of the BowieState Bulldogs. While at Bowie, Shawn has been key to the defensive dominance as well as a viable contributor to the Bulldog offense. He has helped guide the Bulldogs to two consecutive CIAA championships, along with helping them earn a "final four" spot in the NCAA divisionII tournament (2004). Hampton was also inducted into the AAU Hall of fame in 2003. He ranked top ten in the CIAA in blocks and rebounds throughout the league. While at VCU, Shawn scored 603 points and collected 400 rebounds.
Hampton dominated the paint, becoming the first VCU freshman in eight years to average double figures in scoring. He made his mark early in the Colonial league at VCU, ranking fifth in the league in blocked shots and leading the team in rebounding. During his time at St Frances, Shawn was a forerunner in helping the team achieves four regular season championships. As a senior he averaged 21points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks per game and made First Team All-State. In addition, Hampton was named an All-American by Street and Smith's Basketball magazine. He was also a two-time selection on the All-Metro Baltimore team and earned the Catholic League Player of the Year award. In conjunction with numerous accolades and awards, Shawn Hampton exhibits excellent leadership skills and takes the initiative to better himself on an off the court. Over the years, Shawn has been involved with numerous basketball camps and youth organizations that encourage youth to succeed in the classroom as well as the basketball court. His dedication to basketball and love for the game makes him a valuable asset to any organization. His athleticism and aggressiveness make him a force to be reckoned with. All in all, Shawn possesses the "total package", having experience and-qualifications along with a very strong and determined mentality.
