Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I never charge for the first lesson, a meet and greet. It usually runs 45 minutes long. After learning about the student and their goals & expectations I observe their playing. Then, we discuss all the things they are doing right and I make recommendations on ways to improve tone, technique, facility, etc where necessary. We select a time day convenient for lessons, develop a personal course of study to achieve the student's goal and we begin.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Music Education. As both a former band director and the former flute instructor at the U.S. Navy School of Music.

How did you get started teaching?
People started calling me for lessons while I was in high school. The High School band director and Jr. High band director in Bristol, TN hired me to teach after school once per week when I was in my first year of college. I taught for them all the way through college.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all age and ability levels. Beginning young as 4, elementary, middle school, high school and college-age students, as well as young professionals while flute instructor at the U.S. Navy School of Music, now called the Armed Forces School of Music, and adults as old as 76.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Having my students take the first chair in both Junior and Senior Bands.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you get a teacher who has plenty of experience of teaching. You want someone who can analyze and correct problems with not just the music but in everything that has to do with the instrument itself: prober playing position, proper tone. In short, someone who will help you realize your fullest potential.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should ask themselves, "What are my personal goals?" What do they hope to achieve?" "Do I have parental support?"
