Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to start with a meet and greet so we can get to know each other. I will find out the student's learning goals, and preferred methods of learning, so I can customize my learning for them. I aim to keep lessons upbeat and fun, and will be creative in my implementation of methods to help keep things fresh and engaging!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have many years of experience tutoring in various subjects such as math, English, music and Bible studies. I am a piano teacher by trade for ages 4 to 17 and also have several years of early childhood teaching experience. I am always seeking to learn more myself, and am passionate about all my subjects of specialty. I am a bit of an English "nerd" and have personally studied linguistics for several years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $30 for a 30 minute online private tutoring lesson. If you would prefer longer lessons, please contact me for rates.
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring as a teenager as a student, as I was always passionate about teaching others. Later in life, I became a preschool and music teacher, and it is still my greatest passion!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked of students of all ages, from ages 18 months, all through preschool, elementary, middle and high school. I have also tutored adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently had a student who was really struggling to learn a certain topic. I sensed he was getting discouraged, which further prevented his learning, so I decided to implement one of his favorite topics into the learning: Star Wars! The next week, his mom came back very happy, as making it fun and personal for him had rekindled his interest in learning the topic, and it made a big difference in his progress. It boosted the child's confidence greatly, and that is my goal as a teacher - to encourage and equip students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would ask if you can schedule a meet and greet to begin! The right teacher is a very important piece in learning any subject, and the student-teacher relationship should be a positive and encouraging experience. I would also be clear in your learning goals as you contact teachers to ensure that you are getting a good fit.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
- Think on what your specific learning goals are, and communicate this to your teacher
- Decide the frequency of lessons and time you are willing to dedicate to lessons
- Be realistic about your study/practice time outside of the lessons themselves, and communicate this to your teacher
- Communicate any concerns or challenges you have had in the past
- Don't be shy! Communicate your needs, and your teacher, if a good one, will be honest on if they are the right fit for you or not!
