About
I am a travel and social impact photographer who creates images to evoke wonder, inspire action and strengthen communities. My work is featured in books, websites, and magazines including National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, and Outside.
I enjoy helping people with any camera nurture their photographic creativity through workshops, Pacific Northwest photowalks, and international photo tours. My husband John is my creative partner at Merrill Images and while I do all of the 1:1 lessons (in person and via Zoom), he joins me for group workshops, Seattle-area PhotoWalks, and photo tours.
My Jumpstart Your Photography workshop features many example images to help you notice and use light and compose for impact - intentionally making, versus taking, photos. I can customize a lesson for your specific interests since I do and teach many types of photography including travel, portraits, capturing action, nature, wildlife, macro, food and more. I will help you learn to use your camera to create images you love.

I’d love to help you on your photo journey!
I find great joy in helping others unlock their creative potential. I've learned from many pros throughout my career, and continue to grow as a photographer. "Paying it forward" by helping others create high-impact images and tell compelling visual stories is important to me, and I'm good at it. Let's talk!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I do a complementary introductory phone consult to learn about your photo experience, camera gear (including mobile phones) and learning goals. We then discuss learning options (in-person or Zoom), size of class (1:1 or small group), and frequency, and come up with a plan that works for you.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My husband John and I have been professional travel and social impact photographers for 25 years, and photo educators for the past decade. We've taught hundreds of students in our Bellevue home, on Pacific Northwest photowalks, and on international photo tours, and consistently receive stellar reviews. Our workshop partners include Olympus, Glazers Camera, Kenmore Camera, King County Library (online), Global Famliy Travels, Pacific Northwest Arts School and UnCruise Adventures.
