About

I am a travel and social impact photographer who creates images to evoke wonder, inspire action and strengthen communities. My work is featured in books, websites, and magazines including National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, and Outside.

I enjoy helping people with any camera nurture their photographic creativity through workshops, Pacific Northwest photowalks, and international photo tours. My husband John is my creative partner at Merrill Images and while I do all of the 1:1 lessons (in person and via Zoom), he joins me for group workshops, Seattle-area PhotoWalks, and photo tours.

My Jumpstart Your Photography workshop features many example images to help you notice and use light and compose for impact - intentionally making, versus taking, photos. I can customize a lesson for your specific interests since I do and teach many types of photography including travel, portraits, capturing action, nature, wildlife, macro, food and more. I will help you learn to use your camera to create images you love.

I’d love to help you on your photo journey!

I find great joy in helping others unlock their creative potential. I've learned from many pros throughout my career, and continue to grow as a photographer. "Paying it forward" by helping others create high-impact images and tell compelling visual stories is important to me, and I'm good at it. Let's talk!

Lisa is phenomenal teacher. She has so much experience teaching that her materials and lessons are well thought-out and clearly build in a powerful way. Even after only a single lesson we were looking at light and shooting in a new way, with new perspective. Im also incredibly impressed and inspired by who she is as a person and I appreciate her broad set of skills to help us learn everything from photography to lightroom to making printed items. You wont be disappointed - make this investment!

Lisa helped get me jump started with using my camera as well as my phone to capture beautiful moments in time in unique ways. It was also great to learn from viewing the photos of others in our group taken for our assignments.

    Frequently asked questions

I do a complementary introductory phone consult to learn about your photo experience, camera gear (including mobile phones) and learning goals.  We then discuss learning options (in-person or Zoom), size of class (1:1 or small group), and frequency, and come up with a plan that works for you.

My husband John and I have been professional travel and social impact photographers for 25 years, and photo educators for the past decade. We've taught hundreds of students in our Bellevue home, on Pacific Northwest photowalks, and on international photo tours, and consistently receive stellar reviews. Our workshop partners include Olympus, Glazers Camera, Kenmore Camera, King County Library (online), Global Famliy Travels, Pacific Northwest Arts School and UnCruise Adventures.

My introductory "Jumpstart your Photography" small group workshop is $275 for three 2-hour sessions and a 1/2 hour 1:1 photo coaching session. I also do customized in-person private lessons ($75/hour (with a discount for 10+ hours) Our Pacific Northwest PhotoWalks are fun opportunities to create with other - $150-175, depending on length, and include a follow-up image sharing session vis Zoom. In August 2024 we'l llead a 5 day photography workshop on Whidbey Island (via Pacific Northwest Arts School). Most of the time is out in the field with our cameras. Floating photo expeditions with UnCruise Adventures include Alaska ( August ‘24) and Baja (Dec ‘24)
About 10 years ago my husband and I started teaching introductory "Jumpstart Your Photography" workshops in our Bellevue home. That has grown to include many types of workshops, including Travel Photography, mobile phone photography, Wildlife and Nature Photography, Flower and Garden Photography, Photography for Good, and optimizing images with Adobe Lightroom. I love helping people nurture their photographic creativity!
I work with students of all ages, with a wide variety of experience levels and cameras (including phones). I do my best to make each lesson fun, inspirational, and educational. I've worked with many students for many years and love helping them grow creatively. Please call or email to find out more and plan your first lesson!
My husband and I just did a long road trip in our trailer and I especially loved Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Mesmerizing rock formations and fun photography. We visited our son in LA and I loved experiencing and photographing the community celebration of Day of the Dead. Thrilling dancers and poignant ceremonies.
Ask a lot of questions to see if it's a good fit, and talk with former students.
What types of images do you want to create? What are your biggest frustrations? How do you like to learn (online/in-person/hybrid); Do you prefer 1:1 or small groups?
