About

Introduction

I grew up here in the Northwest. I began as a violin student and quickly added guitar. Singing became a must. But the Piano is really where music theory begins to make sense, and is basic to music understanding. When I majored in Music, it was imperative to add Piano to the list of must master instruments. When I decided to start arranging and writing for our daughter's weddings, church worship and the Eastside Symphony it became apparent that a basic knowledge of all instruments was in order. I know from experience, that if a child or adult really wants to learn how to play the piano (or any instrument for that matter) they will go far: and the journey will be a fun one. Rhythm is a game we love to play, and melody is a delightful expression of creativity anyone can enjoy. Chords and theory can make sense and it all fits together to create the wonderful world we call music.

My Teaching Background

I have been teaching piano since 1993 and am so pleased with the wonderful progress each student makes. Piano students are the majority of students who pass thru Patti's Music. But there have also been guitar, flute, clarinet, violin, cello and music theory students. We have such great opportunities we can offer students. There is so much out there to draw from. There's so much to pass on to the next generation. I graduated Cum Laude from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelors in Music Theory & Literature while my daughters were in High School and Jr. High. I have continued studies at the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific University where I pop in to take a class every now and then. Many music publishers also offer great summer workshops to both show off their new curriculum and equip teachers to better serve their students. Graded materials make sure nothing is left out in a student's learning experience and a wide variety of music repertoire at every level caters to students growing interests. The classics are great. But many present day composers have a lot to offer as well.

My Teaching Philosophy

I have taught a lot of different instruments, but the instrument I enjoy teaching the most is the Piano. It is so basic to music understanding. Once a student has the background that Piano gives them, they can apply that knowledge to any instrument. Rhythm doesn't change. Notes are always a to g. Chords can be arranged to accommodate piano, string quartet and mixed ensembles any time a student wants to expand their base. But to get a well rounded understanding of music, it's all there at the keyboard or piano: all right at our ten finger tips. I emphasize reading music and ear training. Proper technique will help a student play with more fluidity and expression. Recitals are enjoyable expressions of what we have learned.
