About

Joshua Romatowski, flutist, has been praised for his ability to “allow each note to sound with its own expressive qualities” (San Francisco Examiner). Joshua’s playing has been described as “elegantly shaped” (San Francisco Examiner) and possessing “graceful intimacy” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Joshua holds a Master of Music in Flute Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as an Artist Diploma in Early Music from the Cornish College of the Arts. Joshua has appeared with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Olympia Symphony, the Rainier Symphony Ballet Orchestra, and others. Joshua was a finalist in the National Flute Association's Orchestral Excerpt Competition and a winner of the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle Frances Walton Competition.

As well as being a prize winner in the National Flute Association's Baroque Artist Competition, Joshua has appeared in concert on baroque flute in every major city on the West Coast with the American Bach Soloists, Portland Baroque Orchestra, the Byron Schenkman and Friends concert series, Pacific Music Works, Early Music Underground, and Agave Baroque. On baroque flute, Joshua has taken lessons with Janet See, Wilbert Hazelzet, Claire Guimond, Sandra Miller, Stephen Schultz, Philippe Allaine-Dupre, and Greer Ellison.

Joshua currently holds the 3rd Flute/Piccolo chair with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and is on faculty at Music Works Northwest. Joshua’s primary teachers have been Timothy Day, Marianne Gedigian, Jeffery Zook, and Janet See.

I am currently teaching online lessons only! I love meeting with my students each week and hearing about their lives and seeing how much they develop on the flute!

    Frequently asked questions

When I start with a new student I spend time familiarizing them with the flute by slowly playing through all of the notes in each lesson, and then from there we work through instructional books or music from any ensembles they are a part of!  If they have any music they found themselves that they want to work on, I prioritize working on that first.

I have been teaching private lessons in Washington since 2013.  I have a masters in Flute Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelors of Music from the University of Texas at Austin.  I have been playing flute for 23 years and have taken lessons from many different teachers over that time.

I work with students of all ages!  I've worked with students from 8 years of age to people in their 60's and 70's!

I recently released a CD, entitled "Cat Vignettes"!  Here is the youtube link.
