Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
To promote each student’s unique expression and discovery of the joy of art, I provide artistic freedom and latitude to make creative choices and work at their own pace. For younger children I feel it is important to downplay the aesthetic value of the finished product. For older students, there is more focus on aesthetic awareness, as it carries over into a deeper appreciation of the beauty inherent in nature, in art, and in life’s daily phenomena. Regardless of the project or materials we work with, students are given suggested topics and techniques to stimulate imagination and help visualize ideas and extend these to completed works of art.
Groups are kept small so students can explore each project in depth and work at their own pace, as well as receive highly individualized attention during learning. Students can come as often or infrequently as they like. This open structure is perfect for homeschoolers, those with unpredictable schedules, and siblings who are in different age groups but want to attend together. Lessons are taught in various media, including collage and mixed media, beginning and advanced drawing, oil, acrylic, watercolor and ceramics.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Kim Miller, M.S., has been teaching art for approximately 15 years in private schools and universities, including Flagler College and Florida School of the Arts, working with students of all ages. Although she teaches other media, her central focus lies in drawing and painting. Kim studied fine arts with a major in painting, and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. She was also a student of painting and art history in Florence. She has exhibited her work widely, including New York City, Chicago, Miami, and Florence, Italy. She received her master’s degree in art education, in addition to studies in art therapy.
