Frequently asked questions

My first step is to assess the student's reading level. I use the Qualitative Reading Inventory, which tests vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension from pre-Kindergarten to high school.

The results guide me in selecting the materials that address his/her areas of development. Then I watch and listen to see how the student works. If after a few sessions I find that these materials are not making a difference in improving his/her reading, I adjust my lesson plans.

I am a certified K-8 elementary school teacher. I taught in the classroom for 10 years. I have extensive experience working with K-8th grade students in reading and writing.

I also have a doctorate in Education. From this education, I gained a broader and more indepth perspective of how and why students progress and why they don’t.

I have been a professional tutor for two decades. This has provided me with experience helping students with their individual learning issues. I specialize in working with children with ADHD and high-functioning autism.

My hourly rate is $70/hr. This pays for my time and expertise.

I decided to become a teacher when my 5th grade teacher told me that I would make a great teacher. He thought I could be a great teacher because I would understand and help students who struggle with division and other subjects.

I have worked with children of diverse cultures, language, and learning abilities. I specialize in working with children with ADHD, dyslexia, and high-functioning autism. I customize my instruction based on the results of assessment tests and who the student is.

I would suggest that the parent or student listen to see if whether or not the tutor is focused on the student or on the program/materials to be used. There should be an almost immediate rapport between tutor and student. Watch to see if the child is looking at the tutor with interest.

Parents and their children might talk about what type of person/tutor would be comfortable working with: young, parents' age, or older; male or female. Ask the students what tutor characteristics they would not be comfortable with.
