CHILDREN'S ART CLASSES Ages 6-11
About
KIDZ ART CLASSES ARE FOR CHILDREN ages 6-11. After teaching public school for 25 years, I opened Watercolor Dreams Art Gallery and KIDZ ART classes. As a professionsl fine artis, I find that my joy is seeing children feel good about their uniqueness and art can do that. As a Special, regular and gifted teacher, I can adapt to any child's needs.
I became a professional artist in 1994 by jurying into Tri State Arts Association ( later to become President), West Virginia Watercolor Association, WV Allied Artists, Beckley Art Group. I was a founding member of an art Co-op, Renaissance Art Gallery in Huntington WV. I am also a juried member of Tamarack, the Best of WV.
The freedom of expression...the freedom to make a mistake and learn how to fix it with color. The laughter, comraderie and growth of self-esteem we see everytime a work of art is completed. I love seeing the lightbulb come on when a student "gets it" and starts to fly on their own.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Ages 7-9, 4-6 and 10-12 are all target group I like to teach. Of course these would all be separate classes.
I like to begin with the basics of color...the color wheel, both primary and secondary. We do art early based on these basics. I like to teach them about their painting tools and how to care for them snd then bring in classes based on the Old Masters. Lots of surprise, technique, and spontaneity. This setting always allows for "teachable moments".
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a professional fine artist. I am a juried member of several art organizations, a juried artist and photographer at Tamarack in Beckley WV. My late husband, Bruce, and I owned an art gallery/art school named Watercolor Dreams Art Gallery in Huntington WV. We taught KIDZ ART to ages 5-12 there for 9 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My class charges were in person for 2 hour classes. I charged $20 per session. This will be my first virtual class and I feel that 1 1/2 hours is the maximum time length online and $15 per student per class will be the charge. It can be paid on PayPal.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching public schools in 1966 as a special education teacher, a regular education teacher 1-12, and English grades 1-9. I have a Master's Degree in teaching Gifted children. I began to attend workshops and had private art lessons in 1994 and have been involved with teaching art to children and adults ever since. It really became a focus when we started Watercolor Dreams Art Gsllery in Huntington WV
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught all types of students. My professional teaching background allows me to accommodate art classes to a student's learning needs. The wonder of art is there is no right or wrong paintings...just ones the children enjoy.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
After teaching students for a few months, the parents had their children choose their favorite 4 paintings. The parents framed them We had a student Art Show and it was such fun and a huge success.
Family members came and bought the KIDZ Art. They had priced their own work and got to keep their money. We served refreshments and the event was even covered by the local newspaper.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
You and I will all be starting to learn to paint online! I haven't done that and you probably haven't either. I offer you a creative place to go that has nothing to do with the events of the world that surround us. Painting takes us to a place we cannot go on an ordinary day.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I curious? Adventurous and fearless? Do I always feel like I am not as good as others in games or other endeavors? Would I like to just get to be myself and have that be good enough? Do I like to learn about new things? Art is for you.
