Lori's Popular Piano & Jazz
About
I am very strong in helping students know and understand music theory, no matter what genre they are interested in playing. I believe in developing a solid foundation that will provide an opportunity for lifetime learning and performing. I love to support those students who have a 'good ear' to explore composing, songwriting, reading chords, and playing popular/ jazz jazz styles, as well as classical.
Every individual is unique and learns and understands music in their own way. I enjoy getting to know a student and work with their abilities and strengths and desires. I do not teach each student the same way or with a set music book series. My goal is to help facilitate the joy of music and adapt my teaching to the needs of the student.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will first ask what the goals, expectations and experience are of the piano student. From that point, we will discuss and together develop an overall plan that will fulfill the student's desires as well as incorporating the needed fundamentals and musical foundation to fulfill those goals. My teaching method is individually based and may utilize a variety of methods and materials. My hope is to develop the skills and abilities to provide a lifetime of joy with music.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Although no one in my family played the piano, I figured out how to play simple songs at the age of three. I started classical lessons at four and continued for many years until high school. I loved composing and songwriting and later discovered jazz and other popular genres, playing with many groups in the Tucson area.
I became a Special Education teacher and later taught Music (K-5) for several decades before retiring in the Tucson Unified School District. I continue to play in various bands, teach piano lessons and am currently learning how to produce music for film and TV.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Unless it is a very young child, I prefer to teach a 45 minute ($40) or hour lesson ($50) as there is so much to cover! If a month is paid in advance, I charge $5 less per lesson.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching private piano lessons after school while teaching at TUSD, back in the late '80's. I also taught group piano lessons at the Tucson Women's Symphony Association and private lesson at Allegro.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages, from 4 years old to 65 years old.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I feel some students like the structure of reading notes, as with classical music. Others have a good 'ear' and enjoy learning how to compose or play popular music. Some enjoy doing both. I am open to teach whatever the student likes, but learning the foundation of music skills, theory and scales needs to be there for all types of music.
