About
I've been a certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for 30+ years and have taught in an interpreter preparation program (IPP). I mentor those who are trying to enter into an IPP and tutor current IPP students. I've enjoyed teaching ASL and interpreting to beginners, intermediate and advanced students online since June 2020.
I love working with students who have always wanted to learn ASL and finally take the step to learn! It's a fun and fascinating language that you can practice with native users online and near your home. ASL is a beautiful visual/gestural language with a syntax and structure all its own, and learning it opens doors to a whole new world!
I can tutor you for a college class or an interpreter preparation program, or teach you enough in our meetings to get you where you want to be. I love to teach and watch my students realize their goals!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to find out where my students want and need to begin. We'll chat on the phone so we start at the point most suited to you. I have videos and textbooks from beginner to advanced, and I draw materials from them, but I tailor each lesson to the student. I follow up each meeting with an email summarizing our lesson. I'm available by phone and text and can meet on Zoom or Skype.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an AA degree in American Sign Language Interpretation and Education from Columbus State College in Ohio and am currently working on my BA degree in English from Arizona State University. I enjoy teaching ASL and interpreting preparation online and interpreting freelance in the community and online. I've held the Certificate of Interpretation and the Certificate of Transliteration from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) for 30+ years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate is $30/half hour, $50/hour lesson. I can meet once or twice weekly, and my schedule is flexible.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching in the interpreter training program at Phoenix College before I even received my AA degree! I've taught ever since, in small groups or one on one.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with beginning, intermediate and advanced ASL students, and those wanting help in preparing for an interpreter training program. I have students who are parents of Deaf children, students who are hard-of-hearing, and students who have other special considerations.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I like to give back to the community, so I volunteer to interpret at public non-profit events. I was especially proud to interpret last year for two speakers at the women's march in Phoenix.
