Larry's Tai Chi

About

As a retired professional trainer, "a natural teacher", and a student having studied Tai Chi classes from three Grand Masters (and many other highly qualified instructors), I am uniquely qualified to help you learn and have fun doing it.

I have been teaching Tai Chi since 2010 and have taught many classes in both Southern California and Austin,TX. I received my certification to teach Yang Style Tai Chi from Sifu Nancy Vogel at the Emeritus College at Santa Monica City College.

The thrill of helping my students learn and grow and prosper from the many health and wellness benefits of Tai Chi is indescribably rewarding to me.

I found Larry to be a very proficient instructor who took a lot of time teaching his students the nuances of this particular style and was also impressed with his patience and use of humor to direct and encourage his students to continue improving and working toward accomplishing their individual goals. I will miss him sorely when he moves to Texas but will search diligently for an adequate substitute and feel competent that Larry will continue on with this training that he loves so well.

Larry Bates is an energetic, encouraging and highly effective Tai Chi instructor. He has all the characteristics and skills of a great teacher. He is knowledgeable, patient, supportive, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He is gentle when correcting the various moves and postures. He makes it an important part of every class to share the philosophy behind the discipline. Finally, Larry ensures that every class is infused with humor so that learning is fun. Im enjoying this class, and highly recommend Larry Bates as a wonderful Tai Chi sifu.

I’ve been taking Tai Chi from Larry for quite a while and nobody, nobody, I can say that, is as good as he is. He works with each individual, shows us how to move the hands, how to move the body, etc.. I can say that anybody if they’re doing Tai Chi, should come to this teacher, he WILL teach you.

I have just started taking Tai Chi and have found it very beneficial both mentally and physically. Larry is an excellent instructor - he very carefully explains each move and gives each person individual attention. Each class I’ve learned more and more about the subtleties of movements in both the long and short form

Thank you so much for the wonderful teaching of Tai Chi. You are the only Tai Chi teacher who broke down every move so the students can digest it. I was just copying the teacher with great difficulty before. My Chinese teachers did not talk while they did it nor break down every move.

    Frequently asked questions

There is no "typical process" for working with a new student. The wants and needs of the student dictate which approach I use to ensure efficient and sustainable learning.

My youngest student was 15 years old (joined with his mom); my oldest was 91. Most students are between 35 and 75 years old. All join my classes to improve their health and wellness. Several students over the years were ex-martial arts practitioners who wanted to stay active without "beating up" their bodies.
