Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I get to know my student and what works for them. I work with them on study tactics that they enjoy and I ask them to be vocal about when they feel that something isn’t working. I let them help me formulate my lessons so that learning never feels like a chore, but is exciting.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am in all honors classes at my college preparatory school, and maintain A’s and B’s. I babysit and volunteer in the children’s ministry at church. I also take part in a tutoring program at my school and tutor elementary students.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I work with the family to see what they feel they should be paying for tutoring sessions. I tend to fall into the $20/hour range, but I am completely flexible!
How did you get started teaching?
There is a tutoring program at my school that I take part in and love it!
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all kinds of students, no matter how much assistance they need. Some students prefer me being there just in case they run into trouble, and some like me to help them step by step. It’s all apart of learning about my student and their needs!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a summer internship recently at a local youth theater. The kids were so excited to be there and I loved being able to pass in my knowledge to the next generation of kiddos. Nothing makes me happier than seeing that “lightbulb” go off when my student finally understands the content.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that fits your needs. Tutors want what is best for you, so don’t feel bad if you have to tell a teacher that you don’t think they are right for you! We understand :)
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about what has worked for you in the past. Explain to your teacher exactly what you like and dislike about certain subjects or learning as a whole. This will help your teacher cater to exactly what will work for you!
