Sonah M. says, "What Andres a great teacher is that he listens to his students carefully. He is excellent at teaching values, colors, temperature, edges, and drawing. He teaches how to compose pictures and sets up still life arrangements with great detail. His explanations are easy to understand, and he snakes even complex concepts simple and does so quite effectively. He responds to questions promptly, always keeps his promises, and engages with his students rather than teaching in a one-way manner. He is very patient and demonstrates painting and drawing techniques, offering a wide variety of methods. I highly recommend him at any level. He can meet you at your level and make you grow." Kim G. says, "Alfredo is one of the most prodigious and skilled artists I have ever met. He makes his personal skills easy to understand and communicate and the way I have grown as an artist in the past 3 years with him is beyond anything I ever expected of myself, let alone something I ever expected an artist to be able to communicate to another person as a teachable skill. If you’re on the fence about hiring him, please do yourself a favor and do it!" Read more

Suzie M. says, "Just want to state once more how much i am a fan of your work, there is something deeply intense and critical in personal sensibilities and modalities of your  art works. Amidst a plethora of art, you manage to say something very different. And this is why i was so keen to work with you. " Read more

I allow my students to tap into their creative spirit regardless of medium used. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a artist create what's in their mind into the physical. Even though I am a ceramicist and abstract painter I can teach almost all forms of art with the exception of printing and glassworks.

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

  • Choose an experienced instructor.
  • Make sure there are enough openings for you and any friends or family members you bring.
  • Make sure you have the right supplies if applicable.
  • Avoid making large payments up front.

What questions should I ask painting instructors?

When looking for local painting classes, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

I could leave a novel length review regarding how good my experience was with my first round of sessions were with Alfredo. I had absolutely no experience painting with oils prior to my classes. As our sessions went on, Alfredo created snd altered my class structure to accommodate what I needed. He didn't just teach me how to put oils on a canvas, but explained the importance of everything from the care and cleaning of your brushes, materials he recommended all the way to explaining color theory, sketching and more. He has played an integral role in me using art and painting to finding peace and putting smiles on my face. I cant wait to see my progress in our next round of sessions. Not only is Alfredo a great instructor, but hes my mentor and my friend. Hes helped a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran find a way to push an illness aside and use art to be happy. I hope I'm able to attach my paintings below. One is my very first completed painting and one about to be completed, and could not look anything like they do with Alfredo's guidance. They are pieces painted prior from other artists.

I loved the class. It was a beautiful natural setting. Very peaceful. The teacher, Lark was very sweet and helpful. I wasn't sure if I would like what I made, but in the end, I did. The other people who attended were also very nice and fun.…

Lula is a wonderful teacher. Her teaching style of experimenting with the materials while learning to express yourself (and understanding there is no wrong) is a wonderful way to learn. She's great at explaining about concepts and how to use different materials. She is always there to help with issues whether it be drawing, painting, or mixed-media. I'm thrilled to have found her and would highly recommend her to anyone regardless of experience or age.
