About

I provide highly professional, enjoyable and easy-to-understand drum lessons. What is most important for me as a teacher is that my students enjoy drumming and that they make steady progress during every lesson. Beginners start by learning basic rock beats and songs and eventually progress to intermediate and advanced drum fills, techniques and styles. Lessons are customized for each student's interests and abilities.

Because of my passion for both drums and teaching, I enjoy creating a pleasant and comfortable musical learning environment for my students. I take pride in watching my students improve their drumming skills and become proficient musicians.

Darren is my first professional drum teacher. Sure, I banged on kits a bit but didnt know what the heck I was doing. Darren has a lot of patience and he helped me a lot with my timing and independence, and lets face it, how to even hold my sticks right. I was doing so much wrong before I met him. He broke me of my bad habits and instilled good ones. After just a few short months, my drumming has greatly improved.

Darren is a terrific drum teacher! I didnt think I would be able to learn as much as I did so quickly. In fact, I wasnt even sure I had the physical dexterity required to learn how to play drums at all, but Darren helped me discover that if I practice what he teaches me, I could do it. He has made my lessons fun and exciting and he is
very professional in his approach to teaching me drumming skills.

    Frequently asked questions

We first talk about the student's ambitions concerning drumming in general and help him or her set specific and realistic goals. I quickly introduce students to the fundamentals of rhythm, technique, stick control, rudiments, drum beats, drum fills, drum set coordination and sight reading of all styles of music.

I started playing drums at age ten by taking lessons and learning the rudiments at a music store in Orange County, California. My education included taking private and group drum lessons from some of the world's most accomplished drummers. I joined my first Rock & Roll cover band at age twelve and have been playing in bands ever since. Throughout high school and college I was a snare drummer in their marching bands and also participated in their jazz ensembles. During high school I took two years of drum lessons from Henry Bellson. After I graduated from high school I attended numerous Dick Grove music workshops and took private lessons from Chuck Flores. I attended master drumming classes taught by Bernard Purdie, Billy Cobham, and Chad Wackerman and also took a percussion master class from Richie Garcia.

My fee for a one hour lesson is $50.

During the early years of my music career I became increasingly more passionate about drumming. That inspired me to want to pass along my skills to others. My own excitement about learning to play drums motivated me to become a drum teacher.

I have taught students from ages eight through 70. Their abilities have included Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced skill levels.

I recently went to the annual Hollywood Drum Show in Glendale, California. Every year they highlight musicial guests and bands and also hold drum clinics. At that event I met and spoke with drumming legends Peter Erskine and Chad Wackerman and watched them perform with their bands. The Wackerman Trio is comprised of three brothers, Chad, Brooks and John Wackerman. During their performance they took turns playing solos which were impressive, fun to watch and educational. I also attend the annual NAMM Shows in Orange County which are also great events to attend because they keep musicians up-to-date on the latest equipment available in the industry.

Look for a drum teacher with performance experience, knowledge, and one who is interested in all types of music. Teachers should make lessons and practice fun and should understand what motivates the student to want to learn. A good drum teacher follows a system but also customizes it for each student's personal goals.

Each student should determine their short-term and long-term goals, making sure they are realistic and attainable. Each student should know their typical work habits and be able to set aside a reasonable amount of time to practice what they have learned at each lesson.
