It takes hard work and a total commitment to yourself and your game. But if you remain dedicated, we can make you one promise – we will make you mentally and physically ready for the basketball opportunity of your lifetime; whenever it presents itself. For some of you, that means making the high school team. For others, it is getting that Division One scholarship to college. And for a select few, it means going professional, where someone is writing you a check for what you can do on the court. I’ve traveled this road a long while. That is why I know exactly what it takes, and definitely what it doesn’t. But the reason I keep doing this is b...

Your Basketball Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much does a personal basketball trainer cost?

The average cost of a personal basketball trainer ranges from $30 to $150 per hour for one-on-one sessions. The cost can be influenced by factors such as the player's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), the trainer's experience and expertise, and the location where the training takes place.

Additionally, small group sessions of 2 to 4 children can cost $30 to $50 per session on average, while large group training of 4+ kids can cost $20 to $40 per session on average

How do you train for basketball?

A well-rounded basketball training regimen should include skill-specific workouts, strength and conditioning exercises, and a structured training program. Skill development includes shooting workouts, ball handling drills, and training tailored to your position, whether you’re a guard or post player.

Strength and conditioning exercises such as aerobic training and strength training for primary muscle groups like hips, quads, and glutes are critical. A structured 6-week training program that emphasizes form, technique, and skill progression should improve your game.

How many hours do basketball players train a week?

Basketball players, especially those aiming to improve their skills, may train for around 10 to 15 hours per week, depending on the level of their game. The specific distribution of training hours across skill development, strength training, and other aspects can vary based on individual needs and goals.

However, much of that training time does not require an instructor. Shooting hoops, working out at the gym, and playing pick-up games all count toward the total training time.

Is strength training important for basketball?

Yes, strengthtraining is essential for basketball players as it aids in the development of speed strength, absolute strength, and core strength. It boosts blast impulse, the ability to generate force rapidly, crucial for activities like jumping for rebounds and swift changes in direction.

Additionally, strength training enhances power output and agility, allowing players to respond quickly to on-court situations and maintain an edge over their opponents.

What questions should I ask a basketball trainer?

Ask these questions when picking a basketball trainer to help you meet your goals:

  • What is your background and experience in basketball training?
  • Have you worked with players at my skill level or position before?
  • What is your coaching philosophy and training style?
  • How do you tailor your training programs to individual needs?
  • What specific skills and aspects of the game do you emphasize in your training sessions?
  • How do you address both physical and mental aspects of player development?
  • Do you conduct initial assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement?
  • How do you track and measure a player's progress over time?
  • How do you incorporate injury prevention strategies into your training programs?
  • What steps do you take to ensure the well-being of your athletes?
  • What is your availability for training sessions?
  • How do you handle scheduling and potential conflicts?
  • How do you communicate with players and provide feedback?
  • What role do players and parents/guardians play in the feedback process?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • Are there any long-term commitments or package deals available?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients or players you have trained?
  • How do you work with players to set and achieve realistic goals?
  • What expectations do you have for players in terms of commitment and effort?

How do I choose a basketball trainer?

When selecting a basketball trainer, consider the following tips:

  • Look for a trainer with a solid background and experience in basketball training. Ideally, they should have worked with players at your skill level or in your position.
  • Understand the trainer's coaching philosophy and training style. Ensure it aligns with your goals and preferences for skill development.
  • Inquire about the specific skills and aspects of the game that the trainer emphasizes. Make sure they cover the areas you want to improve.
  • Check if the trainer conducts initial assessments to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure the trainer incorporates injury prevention strategies into their programs.
  • Consider the trainer's communication style, which is vital for a successful training relationship.
  • Verify the trainer's availability for sessions fits your routine.
  • Seek references from previous clients or players the trainer has worked with.
  • Understand the trainer's fees and payment structure.

I golf two or three times a year, so would not expect to be anyone's favorite student. Coach Hootner was patient, adjusted my grip, filmed my driving-range swing multiple times, offering helpful suggestions and corrections and even emailed my my best swing of the day to emulate. The proof of the power of his lesson materialized four days later when I played the second nine of a short course in Las Vegas and had one one of the best rounds of my life. In a more perfect world, I would practice and play more, then regularly come back to Hootner for the continued work I need. As it stands, I will see him again, likely again a few days before I head out to play.

When I started training with Jimmy in May 2021, I was a 70% free throw shooter and only a 20% shooter on 3 pointers. After 12 weeks of training, I entered the California Senior Olympic Games (Sept. 18, 2021) in the Free Throw, 3 point, Hot Shot, and 3 on 3 Tournament. I won gold medals in the Free Throw (22-25) and Hot Shot event. I also won silver medals in the three point shooting event(60%) and 3 on 3 Tournament for men 70-74 years old bracket.

Coach "E" of Titan Athletics Co has a true passion to help athletes who have the drive to work hard at improving. My son has been working Coach "E" and he has taken my son's ability to play the game of basketball to levels beyond our expectation. Coach's approach also goes well beyond just the physical aspects of the game. Coach also helps with the mental side of the game. He has helped my son see the game of basketball differently in which prepared him to progress the right away. We appreciate you Coach "E!"
