That's the CrossSwords Way!

Looking for a place where life-goal accountability meets grace and a sense of rest for you or your teenager?

Welcome to CrossSwords!

In addition to his weapons experience, Coach Jared holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt and Senior Instructor certification in Applied Martial Arts, with over a decade of experience in coaching Boxing, Kickboxing, TaeKwonDo, and Grappling.  He integrates these disciplines with his students, placing them into "Houses" of training, and designing pathways of learning especially for them.
His belief is that only an experience with ultimate and unconditional love and grace can produce a person full of love and grace.  CrossSwords fosters an enviornment of that mentality as a means of personal development for teens, and enjoyment for adults.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Every Coaching relationship begins with a conversation.  When I founded CrossSwords my goal was to find a harmony between real life change present in one on one life coaching, as well as the fun and exercise offered through sword, staff, and martial arts weapon training.
For my preteen and teen kids, the weapons can function as what draws them in, while their parents may be looking for a mentor figure for them –– that is discipleship.  For adults, the weapons operate similarly: it is REALLY fun to sword fight and learn how to spin and strike with a bo staff, and nunchaku, etc!
Beginning a new training journey is like sitting in a boat full of holes.  When you begin scooping water out, more keeps pouring in.  The journey is difficult at the start.  But after a short while, you get quicker and faster, and a single hole begins to emerge into view!  This you plug up, and continue to bale water.  When you begin CrossSwords Training, there will be a bit of water to bale.  Learning how to stand, to hold the sword, to strike, to step, to parry, etc.
This goes for our life goal work too.

We need to learn who we are, what beliefs in our past may be limiting to our mental and emotional growth, and through time an good conversation we work on them and grow to be the best we can be.
That is the CrossSword Way.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Coach Jared has had over twenty years of martial arts training in the discipline of the Sword, in Weapons, and in TaeKwonDo.  He also holds a Second Degree Black Belt and Senior Instructor Certification in the Applied Martial Arts, and has coached hundreds of students in Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling, Muay Thai, and in the Applied System throughout the last decade.

Through this experience, he developed the CrossSwords Method, which integrates these elements with a focus on mentorship, a grace-filled life style, and strengthening the spirit through weapon training.

How did you get started teaching?

I've been doing martial arts as long as I can remember, and had a great deal of experiences with different kinds of teachers.  I've had the egotistical Sensei, the quiet and timid Teacher, and the caring but perhaps neutral Instructor.   When I first began coaching (at the age of 16), it quickly became my goal to harmonize the best attributes of all these.

A teacher must be strong in their training and abilities, so that personalities with more fiery spirits can test their limits against them, and be brought to understand how much they can still grow!  But a Teacher must also be a calm, they must be still waters amid the storm of each student's life.  Those who come to training, broken by the world, need a Coach who can empathize, understand, and just be there for them.  A Teacher must be there to reassure, a safe place for the one who needs it, as well as to challenge, a strong fortress which they may climb and grow!

It is my goal through over ten years of coaching to be both of these for my students at CrossSwords: to love through challenges, and give grace through struggles.  As a believer in Christ, I find that I am at my best when I most deeply believe that I am most deeply loved.  For my students who are Christians I wish to point you back to that source of joy.  To my students who believe otherwise: I want to bring the unconditional grace-centered haven to you and welcome you in.
Life can be a battle, and that's what we're preparing for.  The warrior is best set for the battle when they are most at rest within themselves.  The path of the Sword is one of working together, myself and you, to make you the best you can be.

What types of students have you worked with?

Spanning from tots aged 3, all the way to adults aged 65, I've had a lot of experience catering training to each student's individual needs.  CrossSwords, though, is geared specifically toward teens and adults.

I'm a strong believer that the world lays a heavy dose of regulation and rigid law-keeping upon today's youth.  There is a good use for those things: discipline, self control, and perseverance.
However, I believe the strongest tool in developing character is an encounter with reckless grace, not reproach.  Through this practice, providing each student with an environment where they can flourish in their particular way and find their path through training, each of their individual lives can grow best.  That also is the beauty of this conviction, that all folks need a voice of grace in their lives, from 3 to 65.
