Piano Studio Of Katarina Butenschoen
About
Do you want to take enjoyable, non-stressful and FUN piano lessons? You might have heard the saying "you have to be talented to play the piano." This is false...you can learn to play the piano and play it well.
You will learn to play the piano correctly, including correct posture, technique, and musical expression. Unlike many piano teachers who may or may not be qualified to teach piano, I am, having gotten my Masters degree in teaching piano.
I love seeing the progress and growth that students make. I want to make music learning fun, enjoyable, and interesting for students. I also want to be the best teacher I can and lenjoy exploring new genres and music with my students.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We have an entry interview where the student and I discuss what their goals and choice of repertoire are. I conduct a small assessment if the student is a transfer student, which includes playing by ear, sight-reading, and playing a piece of music.
I believe that the student's goals are the most important, not mine, and I respect their choice of what to play and learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters Degree in Piano Pedagogy. This means I studied how to teach piano in the most effective way. I have 7 years of experience teaching the instrument and have taught over 100 students, of every level.
I am a member of MTNA and MTAC.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge by the hour ($60)
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching a friend of my mother's. This led to word of mouth, which is how I got more students.
What types of students have you worked with?
Students with learning disabilities, including autism, and speech impediments.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My student taking the CM level 8 exam placed 99% on their theory test and scored state honors, which is the highest level in California.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Not all piano teachers are the same. There are many that are bad, inexperienced, or not even experts at the instrument (it is their 2nd instrument and they have limited ability). These teachers will teach you bad habits, which will be very hard to fix. Make sure your teacher discusses posture, correct technic, and musicianship. If they do not, do not hire this teacher.
