What is your typical process for working with a new student?

New students often call or email before their first class, but many choose to simply show up approximately 10-15 minutes before class begins. Once they arrive, they are given a brief tour and then fitted with a clean uniform for jiu jitsu class or a pair of boxing gloves for kickboxing class.  Depending on the new student's comfort level, she/he will then either jump into the group class directly, or is taken to the side by an instructor to learn the basics before joining the group.

Our students' goals vary from person to person. Some are interested in one day test themselves at highest levels of competition; others are simply looking to get in shape or make new friends. Regardless of your goals, keep this in mind: the hardest part about beginning your martial arts journey is walking in the door for the first time. Rest assured: there is nothing to be nervous about, and we will take care of you!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Mario Romero: Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Master Rigan Machado; fluent in English and Spanish

Carlos Ramos: Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Mark Bradford; Navy veteran

Bryan Gregerson: Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Mark Bradford; Masters degree in eduation and eight years of public school teaching experience

Nancy Gregerson: Four stripe blue belt under Profesora Jessica Flowers de Olvieira; Masters degree in education and seven years of charter school teaching experience

Wayne Tran: Multiple Muay Thai kickboxing certifications

How did you get started teaching?

Both Nancy and Bryan knew they would be teachers from a young age. When Nancy was going through difficult times in her personal and family life as a teenager, she received critical help from key teachers and counselors in her hometown of Montebello, California. Inspired by their actions, Nancy decided that pursuing a career in education would be the best way for her to give back to a community that gave her so much. Bryan, on the other hand, had always been passionate about sharing his interests in history, English, and writing, which was his inspiration to pursue teaching. With encouragement from Mark Bradord, their jiu jitsu instructor, Bryan and Nancy combined their love of eduation with their strong interest in the martial arts to leave public education and open Clube Los Angeles.

What types of students have you worked with?

Clube LA prides itself on our inclusivity and diversity, which includes students with special learning needs. Here is a sample of some of our students' backgrounds (names have been changed):

"Richard": Originally from Cameroon, Africa, Richard is a black belt competitor pursuing a career in dance

"Ester": 42 year old mother of three; in her three months of training with us, she dropped from a size to 22 to a size 14

"Rodrigo": At 15 years old, Rodrigo was having discipline issues in school. His single mother signed him up for classes, giving him space to safely channel his pent-up emotions and grow as an individual

"Leo": 34 year old man looking to lose weight after a car accident that kept him from exercising for approximately one year; his goal, which he accomplished, was to make it through the warm up without having to take a break

"Leticia": Leticia learns fast, and as a result, losesinterest in new hobbies quickly. She sticks with jiu jitsu, however, because the challenge never ends

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

While we are not fond of violence, we are proud to say that two of our students have successfully defended themselves in real-life confrontations since they began their training at Clube LA. Both were female students under 110 lbs who had to defend themselves against larger aggressors. Both students were able to stay safe while controlling their opponents until help arrived.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

We offer two free trial classes to ensure that you do not pay for a service with which you are not happy. We offer these trial classes because we are confident in what we do and how we do it. Take advantage!

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Please let us know if you have any special physical, learning, or emotional needs. Also let us know if you are joining us because of past trauma in your life (sexual assault survivor, physical abuse as a child, for example). We can help you.
