Dirk A. says, "Dan Skaggs has been instructing both of our daughters for the past 8 years. Over that time, they have both become really good at any art-related task. In fact, my oldest daughter is now the President of her High School Graphics club. She has won a few awards and was even picked to present her work at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Dan has been very patient with teaching both daughters, and is an extremely knowledgeable teacher. My wife and I can’t say enough about how worthwhile Dan’s lessons have been!" Read more

Kim G. says, "Alfredo is one of the most prodigious and skilled artists I have ever met. He makes his personal skills easy to understand and communicate and the way I have grown as an artist in the past 3 years with him is beyond anything I ever expected of myself, let alone something I ever expected an artist to be able to communicate to another person as a teachable skill. If you’re on the fence about hiring him, please do yourself a favor and do it!" Read more

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

How do I hire a painting instructor?

Search our list of instructors, then:

  • Compare 3+ free estimates.
  • Explore reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Choose an experienced instructor.
  • Make sure there are enough openings for you and any friends or family members you bring.
  • Make sure you have the right supplies if applicable.
  • Avoid making large payments up front.

What questions should I ask painting instructors?

When looking for local painting classes, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

I could leave a novel length review regarding how good my experience was with my first round of sessions were with Alfredo. I had absolutely no experience painting with oils prior to my classes. As our sessions went on, Alfredo created snd altered my class structure to accommodate what I needed. He didn't just teach me how to put oils on a canvas, but explained the importance of everything from the care and cleaning of your brushes, materials he recommended all the way to explaining color theory, sketching and more. He has played an integral role in me using art and painting to finding peace and putting smiles on my face. I cant wait to see my progress in our next round of sessions. Not only is Alfredo a great instructor, but hes my mentor and my friend. Hes helped a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran find a way to push an illness aside and use art to be happy. I hope I'm able to attach my paintings below. One is my very first completed painting and one about to be completed, and could not look anything like they do with Alfredo's guidance. They are pieces painted prior from other artists.

Anna knows how to paint and she is so encouraging. Having a lesson with her is like being with a good friend who is also an artist and a teacher. We have already signed up for another lesson.

I have always admired Patrick Whelan's astounding artistic ability. I'm so glad I didn't let my own insecurities keep me from taking these lessons. His patient, methodical approach was just what I needed to bring out my hidden talent. I'm absolutely thrilled with the results! I went away from the experience with amazing art and a new sense of talent. I highly recommend Whelan's lessons to anyone looking to broaden their artistic horizons. Don't let inexperience stop you! You will be amazed at what you can do and will have something truly beautiful to show for it.
