I have been an educator for nearly 20 years. I love helping my students develop organized practice routines, tailored to their specific needs and goals. I have taught at Sonoma State University, the California Jazz Conservatory, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the Lafayette Jazz Workshop, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and many more. What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you know what teaching style you respond to.
My style is that I am empathetic, I motivate you to learn, I will listen to your complaints, give you direct instruction, and tailor a practice routine that suits your specific goals.
There is also the 'teacher as an authority figure' method, which I am not. This can certainly work for people, it's just not my approach or personality.
