What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Ask Questions.  A good teacher asks you a lot of questions.  We try to make an accurate evaluation of where to begin and where we are going.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What is your budget?  What is your time availability? How often to meet per week?  How many weekly lessons or classes? Do you have a specific goal or project?
