Making players the best they can be, and learn how to enjoy the journey as much as the finish line. I love watching players fall in love with the grind, and seeing what hard work does.

Gin V. says, "We met Coach Bowie at one of our tournaments years ago when we first started our AAU League. Coach Bowie was refereeing one of our games and he saw how distressed I was so he approached me about helping me coach our boys. I am very happy he joined our coaching staff. We have seen our boys improve with his coaching skills. He has great knowledge in teaching boys footwork, shooting drills, plays and conditioning. We enjoy having him as one of our coaches. He is passionate about the game of basketball and even though he doesn't get paid very much, he does coaching for the love of the game and he cares about seeing the boys improve. He is one of the best addition to our non profit program. " Read more

Your Basketball Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much does a personal basketball trainer cost?

The average cost of a personal basketball trainer ranges from $30 to $150 per hour for one-on-one sessions. The cost can be influenced by factors such as the player's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), the trainer's experience and expertise, and the location where the training takes place.

Additionally, small group sessions of 2 to 4 children can cost $30 to $50 per session on average, while large group training of 4+ kids can cost $20 to $40 per session on average

How do you train for basketball?

A well-rounded basketball training regimen should include skill-specific workouts, strength and conditioning exercises, and a structured training program. Skill development includes shooting workouts, ball handling drills, and training tailored to your position, whether you’re a guard or post player.

Strength and conditioning exercises such as aerobic training and strength training for primary muscle groups like hips, quads, and glutes are critical. A structured 6-week training program that emphasizes form, technique, and skill progression should improve your game.

How many hours do basketball players train a week?

Basketball players, especially those aiming to improve their skills, may train for around 10 to 15 hours per week, depending on the level of their game. The specific distribution of training hours across skill development, strength training, and other aspects can vary based on individual needs and goals.

However, much of that training time does not require an instructor. Shooting hoops, working out at the gym, and playing pick-up games all count toward the total training time.

Is strength training important for basketball?

Yes, strengthtraining is essential for basketball players as it aids in the development of speed strength, absolute strength, and core strength. It boosts blast impulse, the ability to generate force rapidly, crucial for activities like jumping for rebounds and swift changes in direction.

Additionally, strength training enhances power output and agility, allowing players to respond quickly to on-court situations and maintain an edge over their opponents.

What questions should I ask a basketball trainer?

Ask these questions when picking a basketball trainer to help you meet your goals:

  • What is your background and experience in basketball training?
  • Have you worked with players at my skill level or position before?
  • What is your coaching philosophy and training style?
  • How do you tailor your training programs to individual needs?
  • What specific skills and aspects of the game do you emphasize in your training sessions?
  • How do you address both physical and mental aspects of player development?
  • Do you conduct initial assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement?
  • How do you track and measure a player's progress over time?
  • How do you incorporate injury prevention strategies into your training programs?
  • What steps do you take to ensure the well-being of your athletes?
  • What is your availability for training sessions?
  • How do you handle scheduling and potential conflicts?
  • How do you communicate with players and provide feedback?
  • What role do players and parents/guardians play in the feedback process?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • Are there any long-term commitments or package deals available?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients or players you have trained?
  • How do you work with players to set and achieve realistic goals?
  • What expectations do you have for players in terms of commitment and effort?

How do I choose a basketball trainer?

When selecting a basketball trainer, consider the following tips:

  • Look for a trainer with a solid background and experience in basketball training. Ideally, they should have worked with players at your skill level or in your position.
  • Understand the trainer's coaching philosophy and training style. Ensure it aligns with your goals and preferences for skill development.
  • Inquire about the specific skills and aspects of the game that the trainer emphasizes. Make sure they cover the areas you want to improve.
  • Check if the trainer conducts initial assessments to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure the trainer incorporates injury prevention strategies into their programs.
  • Consider the trainer's communication style, which is vital for a successful training relationship.
  • Verify the trainer's availability for sessions fits your routine.
  • Seek references from previous clients or players the trainer has worked with.
  • Understand the trainer's fees and payment structure.

Our experience with Coach Mark has been wonderful. He has coached our two sons, now aged 8 and 13, for the past half year. In that time, both boys have improved. My 13 year old not only has been dribbling and shooting skills but has also gotten faster, stronger and can jump higher with Coach Mark’s training. Coach Mark keeps it fun for my younger son, and keeps him engaged - as a result, he can now dribble and shoot now as well. Coach Mark stays fully focused during lessons and seems to have a limitless number of different drills to keep it fresh and fun. Plus Coach Mark is a friendly and great guy who has a lot of basketball wisdom to impart. We couldn’t be happier with him as a coach.

Carlos is a phenomenal coach. But he’s more than just that: he is an amazing mentor and a great human being. Carlos has improved my son’s basketball iq and has sharpened my son’s game to be successful at the high school and aau level. Carlos works on the technical side of the game. What separates him most from other coaches is his attention to detail and the bond that he builds with his students. I would recommend Carlos to anyone who is serious about the game and has the will to get better.
