Homaira T. says, "Philipe has been an incredible basketball coach for my son since June 2022. His patience, skill, and ability to motivate and inspire young athletes is truly remarkable. Philipe has a talent for encouraging kids to never give up and strive for improvement. He pays close attention, makes it fun, but is extremely effective. By the end of August 2022, just a few months after starting with Philipe, my boy had become the best player in his age group—testament to my son's determination and Philipe’s exceptional coaching. I’ve seen Philipe working with other kids in the neighborhood when they join my son after the sessions. His attention to each player’s development sets Philipe apart as a coach. We are extremely pleased with his techniques and highly recommend him to anyone seeking professional basketball coaching." Read more

Kionna H. says, "Amazing coach! Best coach in Vallejo! He’s done a great job with the boys , i’ve definitely seen improvement!! Coach Jordan really focuses on building a relationship with the kids and being a good role model to them, it’s not just about coaching to him!!! Some coaches, just coach and don’t build relationships which is why many kids stop loving the sport the way they used too. I believe Coach Jordan helps build the kids love for Basketball because of how great he does!" Read more

Rj R. says, "We are so glad we found Coach Mark. My son started classes with him about a year ago, and he loves learning from him. Coach Mark has a calm and supportive demeanor that makes my son feel comfortable, yet he is also very particular and detail-oriented in the best way, making sure the fundamentals are strong while steadily pushing him to improve. The sessions always start on time, and Coach Mark is very flexible with scheduling and make-up classes, which we deeply appreciate. What stands out most is how thoughtfully he approaches coaching - he studies each student’s aptitude, identifies weak points, and provides very concentrated yet well-rounded training that builds both skills and confidence. Over the past year, I’ve seen my son grow not just as a basketball player, but also in his focus and discipline. Coach Mark is truly great at what he does, and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality, individualized basketball coaching." Read more

Gin V. says, "We met Coach Bowie at one of our tournaments years ago when we first started our AAU League. Coach Bowie was refereeing one of our games and he saw how distressed I was so he approached me about helping me coach our boys. I am very happy he joined our coaching staff. We have seen our boys improve with his coaching skills. He has great knowledge in teaching boys footwork, shooting drills, plays and conditioning. We enjoy having him as one of our coaches. He is passionate about the game of basketball and even though he doesn't get paid very much, he does coaching for the love of the game and he cares about seeing the boys improve. He is one of the best addition to our non profit program. " Read more

Shanky S. says, "Coach Josh has been working 1:1 with my 10-year-old daughter for almost a year, and the improvement we’ve seen has been tremendous. He does an incredible job focusing on the fundamentals while also building her overall athleticism—strength, speed, and explosiveness—that not only benefit basketball but can carry over to any sport. His sessions are always purposeful and tailored toward player development, whether it’s perfecting shooting form, mastering changes of direction, or reinforcing the repetition needed to make skills second nature in a game. He also takes the time to review game footage, providing the right mix of encouragement and constructive feedback so my daughter knows exactly what to focus on and how to apply it in the next game. Beyond the technical training, Coach Josh is an outstanding mentor. He motivates, inspires, and creates an environment where athletes feel confident while pushing themselves to grow. We feel very fortunate to have him guiding my daughter’s basketball journey." Read more

Your Basketball Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much does a personal basketball trainer cost?

The average cost of a personal basketball trainer ranges from $30 to $150 per hour for one-on-one sessions. The cost can be influenced by factors such as the player's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), the trainer's experience and expertise, and the location where the training takes place.

Additionally, small group sessions of 2 to 4 children can cost $30 to $50 per session on average, while large group training of 4+ kids can cost $20 to $40 per session on average

How do you train for basketball?

A well-rounded basketball training regimen should include skill-specific workouts, strength and conditioning exercises, and a structured training program. Skill development includes shooting workouts, ball handling drills, and training tailored to your position, whether you’re a guard or post player.

Strength and conditioning exercises such as aerobic training and strength training for primary muscle groups like hips, quads, and glutes are critical. A structured 6-week training program that emphasizes form, technique, and skill progression should improve your game.

How many hours do basketball players train a week?

Basketball players, especially those aiming to improve their skills, may train for around 10 to 15 hours per week, depending on the level of their game. The specific distribution of training hours across skill development, strength training, and other aspects can vary based on individual needs and goals.

However, much of that training time does not require an instructor. Shooting hoops, working out at the gym, and playing pick-up games all count toward the total training time.

Is strength training important for basketball?

Yes, strengthtraining is essential for basketball players as it aids in the development of speed strength, absolute strength, and core strength. It boosts blast impulse, the ability to generate force rapidly, crucial for activities like jumping for rebounds and swift changes in direction.

Additionally, strength training enhances power output and agility, allowing players to respond quickly to on-court situations and maintain an edge over their opponents.

What questions should I ask a basketball trainer?

Ask these questions when picking a basketball trainer to help you meet your goals:

  • What is your background and experience in basketball training?
  • Have you worked with players at my skill level or position before?
  • What is your coaching philosophy and training style?
  • How do you tailor your training programs to individual needs?
  • What specific skills and aspects of the game do you emphasize in your training sessions?
  • How do you address both physical and mental aspects of player development?
  • Do you conduct initial assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement?
  • How do you track and measure a player's progress over time?
  • How do you incorporate injury prevention strategies into your training programs?
  • What steps do you take to ensure the well-being of your athletes?
  • What is your availability for training sessions?
  • How do you handle scheduling and potential conflicts?
  • How do you communicate with players and provide feedback?
  • What role do players and parents/guardians play in the feedback process?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • Are there any long-term commitments or package deals available?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients or players you have trained?
  • How do you work with players to set and achieve realistic goals?
  • What expectations do you have for players in terms of commitment and effort?

How do I choose a basketball trainer?

When selecting a basketball trainer, consider the following tips:

  • Look for a trainer with a solid background and experience in basketball training. Ideally, they should have worked with players at your skill level or in your position.
  • Understand the trainer's coaching philosophy and training style. Ensure it aligns with your goals and preferences for skill development.
  • Inquire about the specific skills and aspects of the game that the trainer emphasizes. Make sure they cover the areas you want to improve.
  • Check if the trainer conducts initial assessments to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure the trainer incorporates injury prevention strategies into their programs.
  • Consider the trainer's communication style, which is vital for a successful training relationship.
  • Verify the trainer's availability for sessions fits your routine.
  • Seek references from previous clients or players the trainer has worked with.
  • Understand the trainer's fees and payment structure.

Elevate is an amazing community and I can't say enough good things about Coach Kendall! My son has worked with him for almost 10 years now and had him as a coach, camp counselor, and trainer. Kendall has over a decade of coaching experience with both girls and boys from elementary age through high school. He knows the game of basketball inside and out, having played most of his life at the high school, upper division college, and professional levels. He also brings a lot to the table having extensive training as a Behavior Therapist and many years experience working as an educator. On top of all that, he is an incredible caring and kind individual who really takes the time to get to know his players. Just a stellar human!

Coach Josh is excellent at coaching kids basketball. My son have been training with him for over a year, and have improved significantly on the foundational skills of basketball. Josh is patient to players, and explain the drills and moves in an easy way that kid can understand. When some skills are over complicated for young player, he would break down to small steps to let them master them. Josh is only have passion on basketball, but also enthusiastic on the sportsmanship. He would give speech to the players to teach them teamwork, grits and many other important spirts. At the end of the practice, he would help players to summarize what they learned in the drills and why are important.
