What is meditation:
Most people believe the purpose of meditation is to quiet the mind. But actually the purpose of meditation is to reconnect with ourselves. And through this reconnecting we find our true peace and joy. It can be very difficult to sit in meditation at first because there’s so much we have been avoiding. And when we sit it all wants to be heard. Meditation is the practice or learning how to trust ourselves. Learning how to listen to what’s coming up without judgment. This isn’t easy in our culture because we’ve been told over and over again not to trust ourselves and that what we feel is wrong. That when we feel strong emotions to just keep busy rather then to acknowledge what these feelings are trying to tell us. So this is why so many struggle to meditate. It’s the opposite of what we’ve always been taught. But in meditation we are retraining our minds and our bodies. Learning a new way to handle difficult emotions from the past and present. Things we have stuffed away and refused to look at. And things that we don’t know how to look at because we never learned how. This is a practice that takes time to learn. It takes patience. Like learning a new sport or musical instrument. You wouldn’t expect yourself to learn it over night. You put time and energy into and over time you see the fruits of your effort showing up in every area of your life.
