About
Hello! I'm Julie Cunningham, and I help people transform into English-speaking pros!
American English communication is what I do. It's what I talk about, read about, and study every day (yes, I find it fun to study English pronunciation!).
This is exactly why you'll want to work with me. Let's chat about creating the perfect training program that gets you the results you are looking for!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a licensed speech-language pathologist (licensed in California), and I've been providing accent reduction and public speaking/professional voice coaching since 2007. I'm the owner and president of San Diego Voice and Accent, a company that specializes in accent reduction, English pronunciation, and public speaking/professional voice coaching.
I've completed specialized training in accent reduction and English pronunciation. I'm a certified Compton PESL instructor (Pronouncing English as a Second Language), and a Preferred Trainer by LDS & Associates (a leading accent reduction training company based in Southern California).
I also serve on the executive board of CORSPAN (the Corporate Speech-Pathology Network) as the current president. CORSPAN is an international organization of speech-language pathologists who specialize in communication assessment and training for businesses and professionals.

How did you get started teaching?
I lived in Prague, Czech Republic from 2007-2008 and Switzerland in 2008 and 2009, and while I lived there I worked as an English teacher. I absolutely loved my experiences teaching and living abroad, and I wanted to find a way to do something similar once I returned to the United States.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with clients from all over the world - France, China, Spain, Mexico, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Japan, Ukraine (and more) - and they have been from all walks of life: from engineers, scientists in the pharmaceutical industry, physicians, politicians, and university students, to stay-at-home parents who wanted to improve their communication with their children's teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Try to make your goals specific, if you can. Rather than saying, "I want to improve my American accent" or "I want to sound clear when I speak", try to think of something more specific, like: "I want to improve my pronunciation of the medical vocabulary that I use when I give presentations" or "I want my voice to sound more confident when I speak on the phone to my colleagues".
Start making a list of the words and phrases that are the most challenging for you to pronounce, and you can use them in your accent course.
If you find that you speak better in one environment versus another - like maybe your voice sounds fine when you speak with your friends, but when you speak to your boss your voice starts to shake - write this down so you can track how your speech and voice change throughout the day.
