Sew Berna
About
I am passionate about sewing and teaching sewing. I am able to provide each of my students with exactly what they need to either learn or to improve their techniques. I am patient, enthusiastic, understanding, and an excellent communicator. Additionally, I have decades of experience in sewing and have sewn and sold women's clothing, hats, bags; costumes for dancers, theater, and other performers; and soft goods for the home (e.i. drapes, pillows, bedding, etc.). One project that was especially challenging was the net I made to protect Claude the Albino Alligator's habitat at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
I love sewing because every project is different and some are actually learning experiences for me. Sometimes I encounter fabrics or designs I've never had experience with. Like sewing, each student is different and needs to be taught in a slightly different manner. My attention to each student's needs and my ability to fulfill each student's needs is a testament to my success as a teacher.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First and foremost I want to know if the new student has any sewing experience. I want to know if the student has a sewing machine and other tools. If they don't have tools, I can provide them with tools while in class.
I always want to know what the student is hoping to learn. Some students have a specific goal (to be able to finish a custom dog bed with removable cover or to learn to make pants). Other students are skilled at what they do and need help refining the skills (being able to work with bias cut pieces for a quilt).
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a teacher of various subjects and to various age groups for decades. I have sewn since I was nine years old, when I made my first dress. I have sewn and sold custom made dresses, sweaters, hats, bags, costumes, drapes and other soft goods for the home for many decades.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
